That threshold varies from state to state. In Tennessee, its 75% and it's required by law that it be declared totaled if it exceeds that amount.

My daughters car got totaled just sitting in her high school parking lot. She wasn't in it. Kid peeked out of the parking spot next to her caught her bumper and instead of stopping kept trying to move. Tore the whole bumper off and did damage to the interior. The body shop did original estimate and said 2300. Adjuster did a more comprehensive look and bumped it to 3600. Value was 4400. Got a check in 2 weeks. Sucks because we had to go car shopping again just 6 months after purchasing the first one. Oh, and it was the other kids second claim in three weeks. Kid now can't drive because their insurance dropped them.

Glad to hear you were not hurt.

When I worked insurance, we were very cautious about any car that had substantial damage. An initial cost of say 30% of the value of the car could spiral pretty quickly when work began.

Also, I think the crush zones make you safer but also much more likely to result in a car getting totaled in even small speed collisions.

And I cannot remember, in Tenn (I guess where it happened), does insurance follow the car or the person? You mentioned it was the girlfriend's car.

Anyway, glad you are not hurt.

And as far as uninsured motorist insurance goes, in my experience, it is a bitch to get that to kick in, just be patient.
