License-to-Kill Policing to Get a Trial Run in Rio de Janeiro

quote:

Teams of marksmen next year will patrol swaths of Rio de Janeiro with high-powered weapons and a license to kill, said a security adviser to Governor-elect Wilson Witzel.

quote:

“The protocol will be to immediately neutralize, slaughter anyone who has a rifle,” Witzel, a federal judge and former Brazilian marine, told reporters in Brasilia on Dec. 12. “Whoever has a rifle isn’t worried about other people’s lives, they’re ready to eliminate anyone who crosses their path.”

"slaughter anyone" dude said slaughter, he ain't playing

quote:

Witzel cruised to victory in October promising a brutal crackdown on criminals who make daily life a harrowing ordeal. Rio will be a proving ground for Bolsonaro’s philosophy of maximum force -- and whether law enforcement devolves into a storm of extrajudicial killings.

quote:

groups of 20 policemen will begin undergoing month-long marksman training as soon as March. After they can kill at 600 meters, they will typically clear the way into favelas, where many residents live under the deadly sway of drug traffickers. Gangs often position roadblocks and lookouts to impede police and rival gangs. Marksmen will alternate, with one shooting and one spotting targets and filming so as to prove a person deserved killing, Pacca said in Bloomberg’s Rio office. Society and jurists are shifting their views of what constitutes “imminent danger’’ that justifies lethal force, he said, and targets don’t need to be actively shooting.

quote:

“The NGOs, human rights activists and United Nations will have a fit,” Alexandre Frota, a congressman-elect, said on Twitter while sharing the video. “But the cleansing must be done.’’

"Cleansing", hell yea.

Basically he's declaring marshal law which might well be necessary considering the circumstances.

This all sounds great, but the truth is, it's not easy to kill people, especially your own people.

As a Marine, we were taught to never refer to the Iraqi soldiers as men or people. It's easier in a gunfight because you dont think, but lining someone up in your sights, when they dont suspect it is tougher than TV shows make it seem.

As far back as WWII, the Nazis learned the toll it took on their men, when asked to gun down German Jews. Same in Czechoslovakia and Croatia.

It's just not as easy as it sounds, to gun down your own people from 600 yards away. Our psyche needs conflict in order to justify taking a life.

Just my opinion, but based on actual combat as a US Marine.

I think if the military started sniping cops and liberals everyone but the anarcho-right would be pissed off

Or are you suggesting that people open carrying should be fair game?

(I don’t mean to imply anything about how Brazil takes care of its crime problem.)

Trust me...

But based on actual combat experience for a PMC, you can absolutely find people who don't have 'people', who don't care about their country or their problems, who operate under very different rules and principles than soldiers and marines.

It's very easy when it's the poor drug dealers, murderous drug dealers even. In your example of WWII Germany it's because it was practically middle class vs. middle class, no criminals, just normal working people.

Do you really think it'd be tough to find people to kill poor criminals in America, even? I don't. I know for a fact I could rustle up some people with little to no inhibitions to clean the streets.

What was the point of that? To say that you were a Marine? That's cool.

I dont know what Contractor firm you are associated with but the one I was employed by faced the same issues as when we were Marines.

Your parents raise you to "use your words" respect people, have a morale code. Drawing down on people goes against everything we have been taught all our lives. Hollywood gives us this glamorous story of what killing people is. Real life is much, much different.

Then there is the real dangerous part. You take the average 18 yr old, send him to war where he becomes numb to killing, then end the war and send him home. How does he flip the switch?

People who are cavalier about these issue prove to me that they buy in to TV and movies and have no real battle experience. Any idiot can find some sociopath that will kill. Ask a citizen to uphold the law by killing fellow citizens, even criminals, from 600 yards away, without conflict, is not a natural thing in civilized society.

We get it, you're a veteran. Thank you for your service but you're not the only vet here. The Governor who ordered this is himself a former Marine. Please stop posturing.

Are you assuming they're all the same?

Nah, you just saw what you wanted to see, man. Which is absolutely fine, but if you're honestly telling me you haven't met people who will absolutely murder drug dealers from service then I can't believe you.

I literally know soldiers who were sent to Leavenworth for trafficking military equipment to civilian arms dealers. This idea that the military is made up of these chivalrous knights who would never do something morally questionable is not just stupid, it makes me wonder what your experience actually was.

You could easily find police and military who would gladly put a bullet in a poor drug dealer's head, especially in a country like Brazil -- shite, I think you could do it in Detroit.

Not everyone is like you.

Let's see how this plays out. If they are only shooting thugs, what's the issue?

Because life is not a movie. That looks like a gun. Bam. Oh. Well, it wasn't a gun. Whoopsy. Gosh do I feel bad about that.

So lets say American police were given the right to just shoot the shite out of anyone that may, or may not, be carrying a gun. Its you. Its your family now.

Yeah lets shoot them scumbags! OK. Now you are the scumbags the police are shooting. But its OK isn't it? I mean, they only shoot thugs. So if they shoot you, by definition, you are a thug.

If you aren't a thug then... well. You can not make an omelette without breaking a few eggs can you?

Do you really have a hard on to let the government just kill its own people willy nilly? Are you prepared to let the next President, who might have very different political views then you, have that power?

If you have to do something like this its a god damn shame and not something people should be jerking off over. Because if its OK to shoot people in Rio then its OK to shoot people here in the good ole US of A.

Let the Brazilian Government clean house? Absolutely. I live in Latin America and in a place where people get abducted in broad daylight and can emphatically say that I would support something along these lines here in Mexico City.

In America, no.

But here? Yes. Do you worry every time your girlfriend leaves the house that she might be kidnapped? Do you ever leave your wallet and cellphone at home to go get something to eat at night?

That's every day here. If someone can be proven to be a murderer, kidnapper, pimp or armed robber I wouldn't even bat an eye for the government to put them in mass graves.
