Why? It seems logical to me.

What's to be gained by going to Mars? We will never be able to live there long-term.

It's just that I think there are other places in the solar system that are better candidates for the commitment of resources that a manned flight on Mars will take. I would rather send a better version of the rover on Mars to Saturn's moon Titan or test the icy moons of Jupiter for signs of biology. I know we will get around to it but as it stands at my age the greatest accomplishment will be humans on Mars and I may be dead before the other more important questions are answered.

With that said, I don't get to choose mission priority and I fully support our nations ambition to explore space. Hell, I would support more funding to our nation's space aspirations. Maybe I am just being selfish....

What was to be gained by going to the moon?

I'm not sure, but I'm not advocating going to the moon again either.

Going because it's there isn't a good enough reason.

1. Public interest. Means more funding for the space program.
2. Technology advancement, especially artificial intelligence. This will make A.I. more palatable and acceptable for the public at large.
3. World rep. The A-bomb and the moon mission convinced most of the world that the U.S. is the shite. Our role as world policeman undid most of that. We need a rep boost.
4. Something to bridge the gap between the left and the right. We're too polarized. Need to come together with a common goal.

By finding something on Mars or just as a by product of the preparation? If it's the prep, you can find it other ways.

You have to go to Mars to do that? There's nothing else NASA could do?

So we knew it was inevitable but how do you feel about it?

Part of me thinks it's a waste of money, part of me thinks it's something we should do because great accomplishments are possible even if we haven't fixed every injustice.

What I really don't get though is why we don't have space hotels in orbit and why we aren't trying to figure out terra-forming on the moon already. How has no one built a base on the moon yet? Maybe all those conspiracy theorists are right and we never got there in the first place.

Sure, it can be done in other ways but NASA must take this opportunity to stoke the nation's interest in space. Our president has set the goal and there will be funding for the effort. NASA will spend billions on technology research which will surely include a lot of A.I.

There's plenty that NASA could be doing other than falling in with a political agenda but, again, what choice do they have? They are a public agency and subject to the whims of politicians. Still, it's better to have a space agency that must kowtow to politicians than to not have one.

Not every injustice can be fixed. Well, except on Star Trek, the Next Generation.

This will have to be done by private enterprise. Some few wealthy private citizens and companies are interested in building in space but it remains to be seen whether they'll follow through with their ambitious plans.

No. Just no.

Love it. It's about time we resumed manned space exploration. Past time really.

I completely agree. I just wish NASA was using the money for something besides a trip to Mars.

Manned mission to Venus. I want to see more photos.
