Researchers using the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia announced the detection of 15 pulses of radio energy from an object known to the astronomy community as FRB 121102.

quote:

For the past decade, scientists have been puzzling over powerful, millisecond-long flashes of energy from deep space. Some scientists think these “fast radio bursts,” or FRBs, come from natural sources, such as newborn neutron stars or black holes. Others think they could be signals from alien civilizations.

quote:

...a $100-million initiative known as Breakthrough Listen used artificial intelligence to detect dozens of additional FRBs coming from FRB 121102, an as-yet-uncharacterized source in a galaxy 3 billion light-years from Earth.

The work is the first step in the initiative’s grander plans for using AI to find hidden patterns in the bigger sea of cosmic signals that come our way — research that could finally provide an answer to that eternal question: Are we alone in the universe?

Essentially, researchers will use a technique called "deep learning" to train AI to look for unusual signals incoming from space.

While the signals coming from FRB 121102 can't yet be determined to be natural or artificial, the intrigue caused by fast radio bursts is spurring the rapid development of AI that can solve this question as well as begin to intensely look for alien broadcasts.

Are we just a few years (months, even?) from finding the first extraterrestrial civilization?

If we discover its some alien civilization's version of "Here comes Honey Boo-Boo" I'm going to be very depressed.

Maybe they're on their way here and just can't outrun light?

We're probably 1000 miles or something less dramatic. I personally find it crazy we can go to the moon if it's so far away. I wish I had the brains or these dudes lmao. And seriously, they are probably underpaid.

Would have to have first been biological so, yes, those aliens are probably long gone. Or perhaps preserved as a sentimental reminder of their origins by the machine civilization that logically succeeded them. For artificial intelligence, however, there would be no clock winding down for their existence.

At 3 billion light years, we're seeing the galaxy about 10 billion years after the Big Bang. That's plenty of time for at least some of the galaxy's stars to have become third generation, which is necessary for the accumulation of the elements essential for biological life to arise.

Biological intelligence, of course, is necessary for artificial intelligence to come into being. We are at the threshold of AI here on earth. Our successor machine civilization may well colonize the Milky Way someday and begin to emit FRBs to the rest of the Universe.

Will it be a beacon or a lure? Are current FRBs alien goodwill messages or "come hither" decoys meant to learn our position in the cosmos. Hopefully, our AI will determine the nature and possible intent of the signals before we're exposed to an alien culture.

$6,666,666.67 per pulse. Money well spent.... they have to report something occasionally just to keep the money train coming.

Read up on the Greada Treaty

Not only do they know some thing about aliens, they've been in contact with and working with more than alien species since the early 50s.

Eisenhower had at least 3 meetings with 2 different alien races, The Nordics and The Greys. Ultimately Eisenhower signed a treaty at Edwards AFB with The Greys. Part of the terms stated that we would keep their presence on Earth a secret. So you can thank Ike that you aren't hanging out with aliens right now.

The Green Bank Telescope was rented by the Breakthrough Listen program, privately funded by Yuri Milner, for the FRB study. Please get your information in order before you post any more ridiculous statements.

You're looking more and more like a LSer.

When NASA is ever mentioned in the news for something like this it's always fun to ponder such legendary possibilities.

Of course that's when the FUN POLICE, come out and automatically shut it all down as non sense. They just say it's static or interference from our own space station or things of that nature. Heaven forbid it could actually be anything FUN.

So sorry guys and gals, it was just another false alarm. No FUN here. The FUN POLICE have investigated the matter and have confirmed that it wasn't Aliens or anything FUN. So we all can go back to our boring lives as if nothing happened.

Grey, green or purple. I'd invite them all in. I'm eager for ET to be discovered.

Yes, but with AI now helping in the search for ET, our chances of a real discovery have increased exponentially.

I'm on your side actually. I was being sarcastic. I love the possibility of intelligent life on other planets. I was simply reminding people that the Gov't., or well the FUN POLICE, always have to drop in whenever there is a Nasa update with potential FUN sprinkled in the headline.

In the end the FUN POLICE have nothing better to do other then make sure us boy's and girls can't go out and play and have FUN. They are the bullies at school that give wedgies, or play keep away with the kickball.

I thinks it's funny how they keep explaining away each new theory of a possible new extraterrestrial finding. Lol, they can pretend all they want that Aliens don't exist but you can't ignore the numbers. Last numbers put Galaxies at over two trillion, and over Hundreds of Billions of stars in each of those Galaxies. Folks these are not small numbers. Atlas the FUN POLICE would have us believe we are Narcissistic and hog the whole universe and we are the only ones.
