Mostly because of the idiots who argue the Civil War was about "states' rights".

A big reason- (I know, States rights)

The War Between the States began because the South demanded States' rights and were not getting them.

The Congress at that time heavily favored the industrialized northern states to the point of demanding that the South sell is cotton and other raw materials only to the factories in the north, rather than to other countries. The Congress also taxed the finished materials that the northern industries produced heavily, making finished products that the South wanted, unaffordable. The Civil War should not have occurred. If the Northern States and their representatives in Congress had only listened to the problems of the South, and stopped these practices that were almost like the taxation without representation of Great Britain, then the Southern states would not have seceded and the war would not have occurred.

This is the conversation.

"The South went to war over slavery."

"Oh yeah, well most people didn't own slaves, Lincoln was a racist, and the North was bad too."

"Ok. Cool. None of that contradicts that The South still to went to war over slavery."

"frick YOU a-hole!!!!!!!"

If Lincoln didn't decide to free slaves until after the war started I think that is significant when trying to determine why the war was fought.

Would you agree that economics played a bigger role than the morality of slavery?

I can remember at a bonfire in high school (2012)a group of guys pulled up with a huge Confederate Flag on their truck. When asked to take it down by administration because some students felt offended they said no. Rather than just leave at that point they instead got ready to rumble and there was almost a dumb fight. These are the people who give the Confederate Flag a bad name in these later years.

It's not really but some have that perception because it's often used as a scapegoat by slavery/Jim Crow apologists.

FWIW, I voted Gary Johnson so I don't think it's a racist phrase.

I have been saying this.

Still not a good idea to drape oneself in the Confederate flag for a variety of reasons, of course.

I did too. I also voted for ROn PAul inthe GOP primary.

I would love for states to have more rights and have never even thought about it in a racial context.

So it's only about slavery if it's related to the morality of it? The economy of it doesn't count? OK.

I think because throughout history the South has cried state's rights anytime there was a civil rights issue being debated. Slavery, segregation, and now with gay rights.

I don't think it is always fairly labeled as racist, but it has a less than stellar track record on civil rights issues.

Bingo.

It's like a German walking around displaying the swastika. Yeah, we all get that it stood for more than racism, oppression, and gas chambers, and he may be proud of his nation's heritage, but it's still in poor taste.
