The family and I are taking a road trip from NY down I-95 in June after the kids are through with school. Our destination is Miami Beach. This should be a fun trip; we have done road trips before, but not this particular one.

We're taking our time to get down there. We're spending the night in DC, Raleigh, and Savannah as we work our way down South.

After spending a week in Miami, we plan to head back through Atlanta and East TN to visit extended family. We've thought about visiting some other states as well, even if it may lengthen the trip.

My kids have been to every Southern state except for Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Kentucky. Is there anything to see/do in these places you guys would recommend? It would be a bit out of our way to re-route through these states, but we like to visit as many states as possible on road trips and do something memorable in each.

You can say what you will about AL, MS and especially AR being crummy states, but I believe every state is worth visiting and each has something another state does not.

I welcome any suggestions!

Charleston is nicer, more historic and safer than Savannah.

He's just coming down here to complain about the bagels. He doesn't need any other attractions.

Do us a favor and stay away from Northwest Arkansas. We have too many people moving here these days. These goddamn "best places to live" lists that we keep landing at the very top of are bringing way too many frickers into this area.

Goddamn carpetbaggers. Git!

You won't have to worry about me moving to Arkansas. I've driven through that state on 40.

Now, I have not visited NWA, and I've heard many great things about that area.

Born and raised in Mississippi currently reside in Memphis. Starkville and Oxford are nice as well as Tupelo. Stop in Huntsville for nasa, check out some of the lakes along northern alabama there is some good hiking there as well. From huntsville head towards florence/muscle shoals. It is a cool area. From there continue down Hwy 72 to Corinth, MS (home of the original slugburger). Then head south to check out tupelo as a sleepy little town and then on over to Oxford. Go see what the frat kids are doing in oxford. Then Head up 55 to Memphis. Do the zoo, Tom Lee Park, and metal museum (don't venture too far north or south of Poplar in memphis) Then head over to anywhere in North Central/ NW arkansas. It is beautiful and lots of nice places. You could spend a month in that area. There are lots of festivals going on all over the south in April-July. TBH you could just skip Mississippi and use Memphis as a pitstop for Lunch or dinner then head to NW arkansas because it is awesome. If you like baseball or soccer Memphis has both in a nice stadium downtown.

It all boils down to what you want to do. Museums, Art, Zoo, Festivals, hiking etc. Time frame would help a little.

Your trajectory looks like it would probably only allow you to visit far eastern Arkansas. I wouldn't bother. It's basically Mississippi.
