Sort of a comparison here:
my senior year, I was the most notorious bench rider on the varsity basketball team, so I went out to the track early on Saturday's or Sundays to start working on my long jump for the spring.
I figured, well there's sand there, and I had no cognition as a dumbass 17year old how long it had laid there and got hard over the winter
It was like long jumping and landing on fricking concrete. Somehow God had me, and my tailbone at least to his point is still okay. I think?

Harry Rex's greatest track and field long jump ever was 19' 9" 1/2

A friend of mine in high school (Northern Illinois!) tried this and broke his ankle.

my natural athlete friend never practiced, was lazy, and he soared almost 23 feet at the state track meet (ETA: long jump obviously)
he ditched a football scholarship early, spoiled rotten with talent, then hit a junior college and got back on the radar, later had a decent career as a running back on the 1-AA level
he could have been an NFL running back if he'd had discipline then
he still turned into a successful corporate America guy, or rather, in civil engineering
