Alright I will make an effort to listen to a song or two from these peoples tonight and I will let you know how it goes.
I doubt they come close to topping Petty though.

If you are listening to individual songs:
Old Black Magic- Josh Ritter
Getting Ready to Get Down- Josh Ritter
Keep Between the Lines- Sturgill
All Around You- Sturgill
Doesn’t matter for Tyler.

Alright I gave the songs you recommended a listen
Not bad. Not quite country, not quite rock. The label of Alternative country is about right for him.
Liked this one better. Sorta sounds like Bob Dylan at points, though less whiny voice
Sounds like country. Its not bad, but its just not my cup of tea.
Preferred this one to his other as well, though I might describe it as approaching tear in my beer genre
Overall, it is evident these people have talent, and are much better representatives of country music than that skinny jean wearing queer luke brian. Had they been on country radio where Im from, I woulda listened to it rather than the classic rock stations constantly
Alright, Im gonna give you some songs to listen to. Maybe you've heard them, maybe you haven't.
I'll even keep them less rock for you, I'll try to stick to Heartland Rock which you might consider borderline "alt country" depending on the song, and I'll even toss in a country song. I wont force you to listen to ACDC or the Doors, particularly their "Celebration of the lizard"
Tom Petty - Rebels should be relavent, at least geographically for you
Steve Earle - The Devil's Right Hand (yes it is a country song)
John Mellencamp - Rain on the Scarecrow
Title track off of one of my favorite albums, but that's due to geographic bias probably, can relate to it more. Also, if you like Mellencamp highly recommend Minutes to Memories, its off the same album, though its a little cleaner sounding than Rain on the Scarecrow
Bruce Springsteen - Where the Bands are probably the most rock out of these, and it was unreleased so, maybe less likely you've heard it than some of his other stuff.

Oh I understand, I like my cds. I have no wish to get rid of them though new cars don't have players in them so I might be forced to put one in if I get a new car

Kiss my butt wally. Tom Petty went to a party where a midget offered him coke. He went to the bathroom, locked the door, and climbed out the window into a tree to leave.
All's M&M did is get people fat and beat his gf

Josh Ritter is most well known around music for his 2005 album The Animal Years
. I gave you two tracks off his recent albums because it is more up-tempo, since you would be more likely to enjoy as a rock fan. You mentioned a Bob Dylan comparison, and that’s actually a good comparison for several reasons. Josh is considered one of the top 100 lyricists of all time. He is incredible at painting a clear image in my head.
The songs I gave you weren’t great examples of his lyrical ability. But I figured you wouldn’t focus a ton on each lyric on the first listen.
Thin Blue Flame lyrics:
quote:
I became a thin blue flame
Polished on a mountain range
And over hills and fields I flew
Wrapped up in a royal blue
I flew over Royal City last night
A bullfighter on the horns of a new moon's light Caesar's ghost I saw the war-time tides
The prince of Denmark's father's still and quiet And the whole world was looking to get drowned
Trees were a fist shaking themselves at the clouds
I looked over curtains and it was then that I knew Only a full house gonna make it through
quote:
I became a thin blue stream
The smoke between asleep and dreams
And in that clear blue undertow
I saw Royal City far below
Borders soft with refugees
Streets a'swimming with amputees
It's a Bible or a bullet they put over your heart
It's getting harder and harder to tell them apart
Days are nights and the nights are long
Beating hearts blossom into walking bombs
And those still looking in the clear blue sky for a sign Get missiles from so high they might as well be divine
Now the wolves are howling at our door
Singing bout vengeance like it's the joy of the Lord Bringing justice to the enemies not the other way round
They're guilty when killed and they're killed where they're found
quote:
Tom Petty - Rebels
Heard it and love it
quote:
Steve Earle - The Devil's Right Hand

quote:
John Mellencamp - Rain on the Scarecrow

quote:
Bruce Springsteen - Where the Bands are

Hopefully I have a class today I can listen to these

As for Sturgill, it took me a while to like him, but he is my favorite artist now, no doubt.
The thing about him is that he has three totally different albums. The one you listened to was A Sailors Guide to Earth. Sturgill was in the navy for a while, and he wrote the album for his newborn son, thus the name.
I’d encourage you to listen more. His 2nd album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, is phenomenal. I’d be hesitant to tell you to listen to a country album, but the guitar playing is absolutely fantastic throughout the album, see “Life of Sin”.
His most recent is Sound & Fury, and it is very different. Almost heavy metal. It took me 4 or 5 listens to love the album.
Eric Clapton heard Sturgill play at the Grammys, then looked him up that night, hethen got Sturgill’s number and told him that he is one the Top 10 guitarists he had ever heard.

how do I join AARP?

Terrible idea. Find a conservative alternative, there are some. AARP is basically a wing of the democratic party.
I love you man (no homo) but leave politics out of it. The greatest thing I did was get AARP card. I think you can be a young whippersnapper of 50 or 55 to get one.
I think my membership was 12 bucks a year (dollar a month) and have saved tons of cash on hotels, senior insurance, and dining. Great return on invested capital. If you really want to powerhouse get both AARP and AAA as if one does not have a discount at a place the other one will. Hell you get discounts at UPS and I did not know UPS even had discounts
