Yeah. Don't want to do that.

In the vast scheme of things, that really is not a lot of movies over the course of 53 years.

I assumed that people today, white or black, saw those events as horrible too. Why would I not? They were horrible.

Hence, your query being disingenuous and purposeless.

quote:

in light of those events and racial segregation, how do you look back at the overall past in the state?

Another disingenuous question. Every state has a checkered past when it comes to race.

quote:

I thought that I might hear a few personal stories or maybe someone who knew someone there or could speak about the situation more directly than what I had read about.

Then maybe you should have asked those questions directly in your OP.

quote:

. I did not anticipate it being taken the way it was.

Foolish on your part.

quote:

I tried to explain what I meant but Genro, and then you, didn't want to hear it because you had your mind made up.

Your explanations didn't jive with your line of querying.

quote:

If I was unclear in the OP, I apologize.

Apology accepted.

quote:

I wrote this post after seeing the movie and wanted some discussion. I didn't want all of this crap.

Couch your questioning better next time and this won't happen.

That's really not that bad considering your time range spans nearly 50 years, ijs

Pretty sure I've only seen about half of those myself.

ETA: less than half (bolded)

Like I said, I thought that I was clear that in talking about the "past," I meant overall. I was not trying to be disingenous. I can take responsiblity for not being completely clear enough for you. Others understood what I was getting at. But, you read it the way that you read it and I can't do a lot about that.

I'm happy to have a conversation with you and clarify my intent. I have been trying to do that. I am also happy to apologize for my role in being unclear. I didn't think that I needed to spell it out for everyone what I meant by "the past." I'll take that under advisement next time.

Communication is a two way street. I'll take care of my part.

The only one on that list that I've seen is Django Unchained. The only other one that I may eventually care to watch is To Kill a Mockingbird.

The Help was pretty awesome, actually. Very funny at times.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was extremely well-acted.

I'm a little miffed that scrooster didn't include Bernie Mac's "Guess Who" on the list, though

Bottom line: don't ask purposeless questions and then act surprised when folks take your intentions the wrong way. That's classic trolling, as you well know, having admitted to trolling in the past on other boards yourself.

I always felt that trolling was intentionally trying to get a rise out of people. Like I said, I have done it on the SEC Rant with rival teams for fun because, well, what else happens there. Didn't intend it here. Hate that it came across that way.

It should. That was a great movie and I loved it, but historically it was very, very wrong. But, it had a "feel good, everyone come together" conclusion that really put it over the top.

I liked that movie a lot too. Very well done.

Couldn't stand The Butler, which came out around the same time.

Ghosts of Mississippi - 1996.

Alec Baldwin is the Assist. DA who goes after Byron De La Beckwith for the murder of Medger Evers.

I thought it was pretty good.

What about Roots? The miniseries. That was a pretty big deal.

ugh. There are things I cannot watch when certain people are in them. Their political and outspoken views cannot be separated from anything they're in, for me.

Roots.. I remember when that originally aired. Mr. Brady a plantation owner.. was hard to swallow.

Wasn't a fan. Started off pretty compelling, but devolved into something too political for me to enjoy.

The Butler was kind of like "Forrest Gump Meets the Civil Rights Movement." It was just too much.

I would not mind seeing a biopic made of John Lewis' life, though. He was truly the Forrest Gump of the Civil Rights Movement, from the Nashville Sit Ins to the Freedom Rides to Selma. Diane Nash, too. I read Lewis' autobiography a couple of years ago. I do not line up with him politically now, but I admire him for what he stood for.
