Casino gambling was passed in Arkansas this past election. Oaklawn Park, the big old horse race track in Hot Springs, is going to add a full casino and 7-story hotel overlooking the racetrack.

I think this is huge for Hot Springs. It is already a tourist town, with lakes, historic architecture, a National Park, and mountain biking.

I'm curious what impact this, and the other Arkansas casinos will have on Tunica.

Another casino will be allowed in West Memphis at Southland Park, and two others will be allowed in Pope County and Jefferson County (Crime Bluff).

Casino coming to Oaklawn

I know Tunica fought tooth and nail to stop this.

Hot Springs used to be the gambling destination of the US. Believe it or not. Well before Las Vegas got big Hot Springs was the place to come and gamble.

Hot Springs is a wonderful little town. Its an interesting tourist destination and they have decent, if not good, titty bars there.

West Memphis, and more so Marion, are finally starting to grow like weeds because they are right across the river from Memphis. As I've said before, the area is closer to Memphis then most of Memphis.

Its very good for the state and not so good for the states around us. Branson won't suffer because they have a completely different pitch, but this will be a kick to the groin for Tunica.

I have some family that lives in Memphis and they were telling me that the Dog Track made some changes a few years ago that made it much more appealing for people to come across the river from Memphis. They have lived in Memphis for over 30 years but would have never considered going there until they improved the place.

Southland already has limited gambling "electronic games of skill" just like Oaklawn had. They added some stuff like Sammy Hagar's restaurant. I'm sure they'll make a big announcement soon.

West Memphis is a terrible place. It can only get better.

It is the drizzling poo. Marion is not too bad. West Memphis is terrible. This side of the river should be huge and its finely starting to grow but I don't know that West Memphis will ever be as nice as, say, Southhaven.

Part of the problem is that we are on the low side of the river from Memphis. You have to drive past a few miles of farm land to get here because you don't dare build that close to the river or it will get washed away.

will be allowed in Pope County

I do like to gamble on occasion but I do NOT want a casino in Pope Co and the people of Pope Co deserve to be the ones who make that decision.

Voted against that shitty act but of course it passed. Very poorly written and restrictive and corrupt with some sort of special "horse racing fund" created from casino proceeds.

Meanwhile 2 years later where's the medical weed? Didn't take long for Oaklawn to move forward.

Jefferson County (Crime Bluff).

Pine Bluff is also supposed to get one or two of the authorized marijuana farms.

Casisno and weed money won't be enough to lift Pine Bluff up. They need some sort of manufacturing plant to get their economy moving. As it is now, if you win money at their upcoming casino then you will probably be robbed before you get out of town.

I believe Pope County will get to vote on their casino.

The ones in Pope and Jefferson would likely be administered by tribes from Oklahoma.
