Do you have "echo" or Alexa?

I have had one for a few months now and she has proven to be a valuable resource to my home. She wakes me up every morning. She reminds me of appointments and anything else I ask her to remind me of. She tells jokes, makes calls and it was well worth a hundred bucks. I know she spies on me but my smartphone does the same thing

Is this a trick question or something?

No. I guess I could have worded my question differently. Echo, otherwise known as Alexa.

My in laws got us an Echo last christmas, still haven't taken it out of the box.
I do appreciate all the features it has but I've just read too many horror stories about those thigns. Yes I know our phones track our activity and I sound like an old man but I generally just dislike the fact there's a microphone in teh livign room that can hear everything I say. I've read stories about a couple having a casual conversation and they said something to trigger theri echo/alexa and it emailed a full transcript of their conversation to all their contacts lol. I don't want that.
We also don't really have a "smart home" so it wouldn't be able to lock the doors or turn off lights or anythig.

Didn’t we sign up for this with the Patriot Act?
I feel like now everyone is freaking out. But after 9/11 everyone was like “yes! We need to look at everything!”
My Alexa probably hates me because I get 1 outta 6 on Jeopardy everyday

Surely that didn't really happen. I have seen my Alexa respond to things she hears from our living room television but nothing horrific like that. I have her in my bedroom too. I know that Amazon can and probably does collect "data" and such but all of the big companies do.

I use Alexa for an incredible number of things:
Lights
Switches
Microwave
TV
Phone
Ordering on Amazon
Locks on doors
Blinds on windows
Garage door opener
Lawn sprinkler
Security cameras
Security system (SimpliSafe)
Ceiling fans
Refrigerator
Entertainment:
Music
Videos
Games
TV
Communication:
Phone
Drop-in to rooms of the house
Texting
Many other things I can’t recall right now.

Why do you need one when all the phones do the same thing now?

We havre one, we have exactly one thing hooked up to it..a living room lamp.
My wife will sit within inches of the pull chain to turn it on and sit there and screech "allexa,. turn on the lamp" like 4 times before it either turns on or she realized the kids have unplugged it or have used the switch to turn it off. Then it is all messed up and she has to turn it back on to reset the sequence or some shite like that.
Oh, and the kids dont understand how the play music works, so they ask it to play music that we dont have, constantly.
It does do.a good job of setting timers for kids to go to bed though, so there is that.

Thinking the government or some stupid company is out to get you shows how inflated your egos are.
