Insert the standard radio pop mainstream country vs real american country argument.
Anything on country radio is terrible.
Newer stuff like Jason Isbell, Ryan Bingham and the like are the real deal. A lot of people stop at the Johnny Cash level when they refer to old country, but the truth is that was the start of the new age pop stuff. Guy's like Townes Van Zandt are the real deal.

Friend of mine is a music writer. He writ or co-wrote several recent songs that have become pretty popular.
I like most all of his stuff and some other music but not all country

This will sound cliché, but I grew up with the classics. My mom and dad had stuff like Hank Sr, Statler Brothers and Marty Robbins on vinyl, and I grew up on that along with Cash, Wille and Waylon, Alabama. As I got a bit older (middle school) I was listening to Hank Jr. and Strait. By the time I was in high school and college I was listening to Travis Tritt, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson.
I have turned off of a good bit of the new country - hate the new Luke Bryan crap and most of what gets played on mainstream radio these days. I have gotten back into the older stuff like DAC, Emmylou Harris, and I am also trying to expand my collection of bluegrass. I have a little - Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Osborne Bros and Louvin Bros. Need to expand it a bit more though.

Themole,
Marty Robbins is about as good as music gets.

Man, Chesney is solid
I'm sittin' in this bar writin' a song so obviously and literally ripping off Jimmy Buffet because I desperately want a song with a Margaritaville vibe but I can't write my way out of a paper bag so instead I'll just talk about beaches and beer and the past . .
Yeah, he's great.
Country is typically pretty "literal." And that's OK. But it better be a story worth telling.

I don't think Chesney even writes most of his Buffet rip off songs.
