The wife was just diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer; was detected during her annual mammogram (I can't believe how many women elect NOT to have these annually). Still a couple of tests to run before they go in an remove the tumor; MRI to determine if it's spread (the surgeon is virtually certain it hasn't) and a couple genealogy tests to see if they may want to explore options. Both her Mom & Grandma had breast cancer and both survived it. The tumor is slightly larger than a BB.

It looks like the surgery will be after Thanksgiving so pray that her doctor is more than skilled enough to do the job. After the surgery she'll have 3 weeks of radiation and then semi-annual mammograms for 5 yrs and if cancer free back to normal mammograms.

TIA

UPDATE

Still in the waiting room but just spoke to the surgeon and the surgery went great; margins all looked good; should be home in a couple of hours

Best of luck, prayers to you during this time. Sounds like they might have caught it super early, so that's good news.

The good news is that unless it has spread, and it doesn't sound like it has, Stage 1 breast cancer is easy to treat. It sounds like she has Stage 1A breast cancer, where the tumor is smaller then 2 cm (roughly the size of a peanut). Treatment success for that is around 100%. That is just what I can quickly look up, I am sure there are plenty of folks here more knowledgeable then I am.

We will keep your wife in our thoughts and prayers. It is a scary thing to go through for everyone involved even with such a good prognosis. If you need to vent you know we will be here to listen.

They initially said between stage 0 and 1 but the doc said it's stage 1 so it's kind of semantics.

Good guess; it's 2 X 4 cm

quote:

The doc said 95% which is doc speak for "we're going to kick it's arse".

For the age question, since the wifey doesn't have a Rant account, she's 61.

One of my lifelong friends had an almost identical diagnosis in May of this year.

Had a lumpectomy and three weeks of radiation. Making a great recovery.

If it didn't get in the lymph nodes, you're good.

No breast cancer in my friend's family for three generations.

They want her to take a medication for five years. After reading the side effects. She has about decided not to take this option. Said she will stick to regular mammograms and make sure she has thorough physical exams regularly.

Good luck with the battle. I'm sure your wife will do fine and make a complete recovery.

Will do.

One of my wife's longtime female friends is over 50 and never gets mammograms; hopefully this will change her mind.

Our daughter had forgotten that both her Grandma and Great Grandma had it; it's on her immediate to do list even tho she's in her mid-30s.

Prayers for both of you.

My wife is fighting follicular lymphoma right now. She should be able to beat it, but it will be a long drawn out process.

I hate breast cancer but as others have said if it’s stage 1 and detected early which evidently it was, great odds are she’s gonna be just fine.

quote:

Both her Mom & Grandma had breast cancer and both survived it

My mom, her 3 sisters and my first cousin who’s 4 years older than I am have all had it.

All are still kicking and doing pretty well. Moms’s finally in remission (at least for the last few months and hopefully for good but odds aren’t too smurfy on that since it’s now more viewed as in something you just continue to deal with and treat as need be) and is done with chemo infusions and is taking anti estrogen pills now - this last bout, her third, lasted well over a year

I feel like my areolas are basically bullseyes just waiting on the year when the doc tells me it’s in me. But I fully intend to kick it’s arse, just like your wife is going to do.

Almost all of them and me too have had the gene tests (BRCAs) and every one of us have come back negative, sounds to me like those tests can’t be totally accurate.
