We aren’t doing much to stop the spread. How is that a good thing?

So, what do you think should be done to stop the spread? Tell everyone it's a huge deal on an internet forum?

Shut downs are coming because scientists will recommend it.

Are you going to work or school tomorrow or are you going to be paralyzed by this?

Sure it’s a problem that needs attention but and I’m in over 50 population but just like everything else no need to freak out.

No, we are arguing on an internet forum because it's morbidly entertaining that there are people so ignorant that they ignore factual information and buy into conspiracies that a very real viral outbreak is "fake news".

That, and this is looking more likely to impact SEC sports (the NCAA tournament) by the day.

Doubt it. Restricted travel to other countries yes probably so.

I'm going to work until it is recommended that I don't.
I am trying to reduce how frequently I go to congested stores though because that's just smart.

The offices around me have already starting to ban people from coming in who have traveled to high-activity countries.

I'll start by saying I have an MD attached to my name so feel free to call me an idiot all you want but it won't mean much. I get the feeling you are a Republican and are downplaying this so hard because that's what the Rs in office want you to do. (Not trying to imply it's strictly a Republican problem either, it goes both ways and is part of the embarrassing state of American politics).

It's silly to compare this to the flu right now because the flu virus has been around for a very long time and has had plenty of research done on it, has a vaccine, and has a treatment medication. Despite all this, it's still an incredibly dangerous virus. There's a reason all healthcare workers are required to get the immunization and we try to convince all our patients in the clinic that getting the vaccine annually is crucial. And while yes, it mainly kills the elderly and immunocompromised, it can and has killed the young (I believe that poor young ESPN reporter that recently died had it but I don't know if that was ever confirmed but his symptoms were certainly consistent). This coronavirus is still relatively new and continues to spread rapidly and has proven to be significantly deadly from the data we have currently. As of this point there is no treatment or vaccine to combat it. If everyone in the country were to just ignore it and not follow any precautions there is a very good chance it may wind up with more cases and fatalities than the flu. Maybe in the end it will be an overreaction but it's much better to be overprepared than underprepared. As time passes we will have more information on the virus as well as possibly a vaccine/treatment but until then we should do everything possible to contain its spread.

It is a huge deal in China, Iran, and Italy. Do you think Americans are magically immune?

Thats what confuses me. People claim its our media pushing an agenda but like Italy is literally in a travel ban over this. I'm pretty confident Italy doesn't give a frick about our politics so obviously their scientists think something is up.

No, I think it's a matter of science and a history of having people like you try to force this shite down peoples throats every time there is some new virus out there.

I'm not going to pretend the mortality rate in the US is going to be as high as China's if that's what you mean by "magically immune". I will be surprised if it surpasses 0.2% in the US overall, which puts it slightly above the flu. And that rate is likely to drop in time as treatments and such are found for it.

And that’s fine to restrict people that have traveled to countries with a high rates.

Here what it is going to effect more than anything if we keep up with the hysteria. The stock market.

So you agree it’s a major problem in Italy? It wasn’t as of 3 weeks ago, and it is now. We are just a few weeks behind them.

It already has and will affect the stock market, which really sucks.

The outbreak in China alone and fallout from that has and will affect the market.
