driving the ridge cut every day if you are working downtown isn’t something I would advise as it’s the reason I plan on moving.

Can't fault you for that.

Chattanooga is ok, but the schools are better just across the State line in Ringgold GA

Then you get stiffed with state income tax.

Could you finagle it (ex: getting a PO box in Georgia) and live in TN and send the kids to school at Ringgold?

Isn't that where Stacked lives? Maybe he can rent you a room.

Nowhere in this country has more inexplicable traffic given its size.

Are there any smaller cities in eastern Tennessee that have a decent school system and at least somewhat affordable housing?

Maryville/Blount County would be my recommendation. Maryville City has a very good public school system. Possibly one of the best if not The best in East TN. The city has a little North of 30k+ with Blount County having around 130k+. Plenty to do there on it's own, but it's only 20 minutes away from Knoxville/Knox County for better shopping/nightlife as an added bonus. Beautiful Mountain views looking East. Peaks close to 6k ft in some areas of the county. One of the Gateways to the GSMNP. Very clean and safe area. McGhee Tyson (Knoxville Airport) is actually in Blount County so that's another major plus. 5-10 minute drive to and from the airport. Great career opportunities in the area between Blount, Knox and Anderson Counties.

Just a ton of positives IMO.

Added bonus: You couldn't be anymore in Big Orange Country if you tried.

After a few recent visits, I'm strongly considering moving my family to the Chattanooga area. East Tennessee has always seemed extremely appealing to me.

I'm going to research all of this on my own of course, but could anyone recommend a neighborhood or suburb with decent public schools that would be affordable for a very middle class family? (I recognize it's also very possible that there is no such place in the area.)

Is Chattanooga one of those places like Asheville, N.C. where I really should have moved there 15 years ago if I was ever going to do it?

For public schools you want Signal Mountain or the East Brainerd/Ooltewah area zoned for East Hamilton.

After that Soddy Daisy or an outlying area. Stay the Hell away from Chattanooga city schools.
