Closest planet to earth?

I swear it seems like I read an article showing that Mercury was closer than Venus and Mars. Anybody know something about this?

If you lined all of the planets up perfectly, Venus would be the closest however on average the distance between Mercury and Earth is the shortest due to their orbits

Astrophysics for the win folks. Orbital mechanics can get pretty funky.
