Old way = mechanic who knew what they were doing
New way = parts replacer but you are screwed if it is not in the systemVery true...and you've probably noticed that the part to replace consists of more than just the broken part, but a "unit", or group of parts of which your bad part is a part of (sorry for the pun). More expensive for the customer, profitable for the manufacturer/dealer and easier to inventory for both manufacturer and dealer.

Yes, I found this out about a year ago when somebody hit the side mirror on a rented SUV. Mirror was broken by some idiot who fled the scene. The assembly (with labor) was just shy of 1,500 and of course my deductible was 1,500.

In my drivers ed class in high school, you didn't pass unless you changed a tire.
