Congratulations!
I used coke back in the 80s. Those were some of the worst years of my life. In August 1986 I had planned suicide because I lost my girlfriend over my drug and alcohol problem.
Had to clean up my act an start fresh. I was 25, almost 26. Living in Tupelo, Mississippi. I was really down on myself and it was very hard for me to break the addiction. I slipped twice, the first time a few months later and then again in '88.
But I came through. Been clean from all of it for more than 30 years now. I'm a lucky bastard. I still drink on occasion but it's nothing like how I used to frick myself up. Besides, I have my wife of 29 years who watches me like a hawk... as she should! I'm a lucky man.
What was worse, the drug addiction or living in Tupelo?

Just seeing this also!
Man, what a fantastic accomplishment. You have proven to yourself that you are capable of great things by maintaining the proper mindset, putting forth the effort, and never giving up.
Yours is truly a path that many never get the opportunity to find, or have the courage to take.
I know your daughter is proud of you, and we are too.
Much, much respect for making this post and sharing your journey, brother.

September 15th will be 15 years here. I too loved the pain pills. Which led to the heroin addiction. Ive been to countless rehabs etc. But when i truly quit was when i said im tired of living my life waiting on a phone call. You cant try to quit for momma, wife etc. It has to be YOU want to quit. Until that moment happens you aint gonna make it. Ive sponsored countless people. Ive helped people here. Ive spoken to group homes etc. Ive fought your battle.. Daily. I still want to get high. But i know what happens if i take just one. Jail, or death. Continue the fight. Keep on keeping on. Kudos

My "kid" will be 21 on that date. A lot of good vibes there.

Would never go back.

Thanks Roger. Same to you. I'm never going back either. I think about cheating now and then. But, even when I've been injured, I was ready to stop taking the pain pills. I have no desire to get back to being like that all the time.

You don’t owe anyone a thing
However, I’d be interested to hear about how things were and how they have improved
I also think your testimony will be an inspiration to many on this forum, as I am sure it is IRL

What things in particular? I already give out too much personal info. So, I'm not gonna get too specific on some stuff.

I think most of it is in the thread. Main thing is that I addressed my anger issues. I'm a better person and a much better father. I'm healthier physically obviously because I'm not pumping my body full of drugs, but also got into exercising and lost a lot of weight.
I find myself to be a lot more empathetic and understanding. I'm always trying to understand other people's point of view instead of offering my own point of view first. Is that me getting older or seeing things more clearly due to being sober? Hard to tell. Maybe it's both.

Looney, thank you for this thread buddy.
I'm on day number six of no whiskey.
As Colin Raye sang, my eyes are clear and bright without that haze.
Beer and wine are like swatting flies to me. Whiskey is like being bombed by the enemy

That's amazing, Harry. I had six days once. It has to start somewhere. I sincerely happy to hear this.
Even if you do eventually have a setback, don't let that lead to more setbacks. You've proven to yourself that you can do this. Keep it up, my friend!

Almost 10 years now. Can't believe I was off by a month last year.
Hope everyone that was in the thread before is doing well.
