Al's Dance Barn has the best buffet in town.

You looking for casual or fine dining? If the latter, go to the Hot &Hot Fish Club on the southside. Phenomenal.

Never ate downtown while I was working in UAB, except fish market and random fast food. Always ate out on 280.

You staying somewhere near the airport, or Southside, or what?

Not the airport or Southside. Downtown. By the Art Museum. The Tutwyler Hotel.

Red zone on the south side is a nice bar and grill

I am just flying in for the game and packing light. I will be dressed appropriately for going out Friday night, but not nice enough for "fine dining". We are looking for a restaurant that is in between casual and fine dining.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Tood English Pub in the new Westin hotel is good.
Also a gastro pub (high end bar food and high gravity beer) called Carrigan's Public House is another new place that opened up recently that's pretty good.
El Barrio is a good Mexican place.
Rouge Tavern is a bar with decent food.
Then the usual good higher end restaurant's include Bottega, Hot and Hot, Veranda, and Highlands.
Chez Fon Fon is a good French restaurant too but it's small so sometimes there is a wait if u have a large party of people.
I tried to list things that are fairly close to where you are staying.

Ok then do fish market you can get valet even and it isn't "fine dining" per say but really good seafood
Or again if you like beers J.Clyde's
Fish Market has a much larger selection of food pretty much any fish cooked any way you want it, lots of side options and a band or live music is usually playing on Fri Night, just go sit in the main dining room to the right when you walk in instead of going through the line and you'll be seated and get a waiter etc

If you're looking for tex mex, Rojo on Highland is fantastic. There are plenty of places to eat on 5 Points if you can wade through the weirdos.

Fish Market is good.
Sekisui Pacific Rim, if you like sushi, is good.
Heard good things about Metroprime steakhouse, never been though.
Al's Deli over behind UAB is great, but super casual, so might not be what you're looking for.

What kind of food are we talking here? Frog legs, Alligator tail, etc? Not sure if Birmingham has anything like that downtown.
Just messing with ya. Just about any of the fine dining in the 5 points area is good. That's where all the trendy chefs have restaurants.

Thanks guys. Fish Market sounds like a winner. Although I'll mention to the group J Clydes. What kind of food do they serve? Someone recommended a bar on Cobb Lane for a good place to have drinks.
