Ironically, we actually live in the apartment across from her parents. So housing wasn't too difficult -- almost everything here can be done under the table. So long as you have the money, they'll give you a place. Likewise with starting a business. You can open one up in the market without a permit, although the government officially requires one.

And funnily enough, she doesn't like America so much.

That's probably my fault though; I like to make racial and and national jokes (always have, always will) and I'm sure she's sick of it hahaha.

Is the violence really as bad as I imagine most Americans picture it to be? Is the majority of the violence situated in border towns? Has there been any decrease in the cartels over the past few years? How does your average mexican view the cartels?

Speaking from experience, Mexican poontang is pretty top notch.

The violence: Is as real as anything else in the world. As I said earlier there was a decapitated body deposited in my municipality (Tlalnepantla) with the message: The War Has Started.

The majority of the violence is indeed isolated, it's generally safe but you have to be smart. Don't stay out late unless it's at a hotel bar or something like that, the beaches are safe and don't wander too far. Stay the frick off the highway.

The cartels have weakened but that's because the government targets certain ones. Usually what happens is the cartel splinters (Los Zetas is a splinter group) and becomes an autonomous entity. The government is especially targeting Los Zetas and the Autodefensa (self-defense) movement out of Michoacán in response to the Caballeros Templarios (Knights Templar).

The average Mexican will sometimes support cartel activity. They DO perform good actions for those who pay, and they see it as a viable alternative to the government. So it essentially comes down to: Do I hate the government or the cartels more?

Kinda funny but yeah, it's definitely worth it.

Not only for the poontang but it is a LOT easier for a young man (I'm 26) to start up his own business. In America I'd have to wade through a sea of red tape to even hire an employee.

Here? I can start anything I want without a second question. I can circumvent almost everything, as you can open any kind of legit business you want as long as it's in or near your house.

Is your ancestry Hispanic? Do you blend in with the locals? I'm asking because I think a 6'4" blond Nordic would attract constant attention.

How did you meet your hot tamale? What do you have against marriage, especially considering it would legitimize your status in Mexico and hers in the US?

Do you see a lot of ads on how to get on American food stamp programs down there?

I'm about 5'10'', brown hair and green eyes. Generally what gives away Caucasians is their height. If I grow a beard I can blend in, but ethnically I am German and Irish.

I actually met my girlfriend something like a decade ago online and one day I was like: Maybe I ought to go meet her. She was attractive, we had been talking for years so we knew we were compatible. As for marriage: I've seen it shaft men in the past.

Oh and I should mention my last name is ''Rivera'' from adoption (my step-father), so I have that going for me.

Indeed. I also see ads on how not to take over Texas.

Also as an addendum

Something that grinds my gears about Mexicans and just Latin America in general is they refer to us as ''North Americans''. The conversation usually goes like this.

''...But, Mexico is apart of North America...''

''But you're not all of America.''

''We're not all of North America, either.''

''Well, that's why we call you 'The United States'.''

''But Mexico is also the 'United States of Mexico'. So that doesn't fix anything.''

Also for our nationality they say something like: ''Estadounidense'' which is essentially United Statesian. The butthurt from this country is astounding.

I'm a man of chances. If you want to be safe in a big city, don't take public transportation at night.

Although getting carjacked and taken around for a ride is a lot more likely here.

Is there anything of a social scene, or does everyone stay because of the crime? What are the females like?

If Mexico City were on a monopoly board would it be closer to a Baltic avenue or say, a boardwalk?

Did you see a couple gringos driving from the airport to Los piramides last April/may? Did you help give them directions and did they seem to blend in well enough for a couple 20 something wasps?

There is an ENORMOUS social scene here. I stay inside and out of the limelight because I know what happens to white guys like me with military backgrounds when we get kidnapped. But there are tons of clubs, the house is constantly bumping and the females are stunning.

I'm from South Georgia (most recent place living, I've lived all over) so my perception may be skewed but I've never seen so many beautiful women clustered in one area.

The problem is that they all get with fat, stable jobbed Mexicans. Seriously.
