Ho-hum. Add him to the pile.

He's only renting....

Phil Libin left the Bay Area for Arkansas.

I really can't blame him. A billionaire can live (pardon the expression) high on the hog where ever he wants but in NW Arkansas it is even higher than the Bay Area. You can live like a King in a place where you only have a two hour commute if you are working in Little Rock.

Bentonville/Rogers is a place where a super-wealthy person can live regular "small town" life relatively inconspicuously. You can have your gated palace in SW Rogers/Cave Springs (because there are a lot of them now), enjoy fine-dining and the arts, but still be in the countryside in a few minutes driving. And unless you're a Billionaire with a news article announcing your presence, nobody knows or cares who you are.

Unless your last name is Walton, there are still bigger fish in the small pond.

Very true. If I was super wealthy, no danger of that folks, I would be sorely tempted to live there.

Bull sharks can thrive in both salt and fresh water and can travel far up rivers. They have been known to travel up the Mississippi River as far as Alton, Illinois, about 700 miles (1100 km) from the ocean.

So true. Otherwise, Arkansas is like Mississippi.

Great. Now the next time I go fishing down at the creek I'll be worried a bull shark will leap out of the water and attack me. Thanks for those nightmares.

Largest investment bank in the USA outside of Wall Street was in Little Rock. Lots of money in the state with no ties to Wal Mart. Rockefeller was there when Sam Walton was still messing his diapers and Reynolds aluminum was old presence as well. Back in the heyday of the mob in the 30's, Hot Springs was a "safe city" so lots of m money back then.

Well, sure. But lots of money in the state is directly or indirectly tied to Walmart. People who worked there out of high school in the 1980s became millionaires with their stock purchase plan. I know of a few.

Arvest Bank is largely a Walton enterprise.

Bentonville is something else, though. We aren't really in the "Southern Living" footprint up here (frankly we are more likely to be covered in Texas Monthly), but Bentonville's restaurant scene and cultural amenities are top notch. They blew past Fayetteville around 7-8 years ago and the gap is widening.

Fayetteville has its cute little film fest. Then Bentonville starts one overnight that attracts Hollywood stars every year.

Fayetteville has its hard-earned Roots Fest, a totally organic bluegrass and Americana festival. Bentonville steals the bigger and better Fresh Grass from Massachussetts.

There isn't much that Walton money can't do. Makes it a fun and interesting place to live.

But Fayetteville still has Bottom's Up. That will always give it the edge in sheer sleaziness.
