quote:Yeah, I mentioned that exact scenario a couple posts above, in reference to the crazy Mizzou professor.
But in the event someone did attack them, let's talk about what is a more realsitic scenario. And that would be a teacher who is in class and gets warning of the shooter. They can then try to prevent entry by locking the doors. If the shooter is able to get the doors down, the teacher could be gun pointed at the door and as they try to come in would have an open shot directly at the shooter from less than 20 feet. They can also be behind cover and would have defenders advantage.
As you say, lock the door, barricade it if it opens inwards. Take cover behind a desk or similar, and train your handgun on the door.
Hell, where I work had an active shooter alert within a month ago, part of the stated plan is "find a weapon to defend yourself if need be". And that's at a gun-free zone, so you'd be limited to finding some sort of club or stabby instrument. You're locked in and taking cover, but if that's the room shooter wants to enter, you need to fight for your life.

Train the teachers. It’s not that difficult of a concept.

Train the educators. Simple concept

Most of whom probably won't really want to be trained or have to carry a gun? And it's one thing to train a bunch of people how to hit a paper target. But to have 100+ teachers trained to handle a chaotic situation like an active shooter with thousands of students running around is unrealistic. Especially adding in the fact that teachers would likely view each other as the potential threat since they would have no idea what the shooter looked like or where they were. Additionally, it would make it a mess for the responses cops to assess where the real shooter was and would make identification of the actual threat a lot harder in the chaos of the moment. Arming all teachers is an absolutely terrible idea which would just add to the chaos of an active shooter situation.
And that's before you start getting into issues of expecting teachers, who once again all won't want to carry, to safely store their gun and maintain them at all times.
There absolutely should be more armed guards in schools / on campus. But arming all teachers is a terrible idea.

Offer the educators the opportunity to become trained. Don’t make it mandatory. It’s literally no different in the personal sector of concealed carry permits.
Be prepared.
Be prepared.
