Absolutely, but it is an incredibly stupid business model.

How is it stupid?

I don't shop at A&F but I'm not sure how it's a stupid business model. Victoria's Secret doesn't market themselves to obese people and they do just fine.

Walmart doesn't market themselves to the middle class and wealthy and they do just fine.

Target doesn't market themselves to the lower class and they do just fine.

Ralph Lauren doesn't market themselves to fat or poor people and they do just fine.

There's a market for everything. Just because you don't like or fit into that market doesn't mean that it's a bad business model.

Not marketing yourself to a specific segment of the population is one thing.

When your CEO goes out and talks shite/alienates a majority of the US population is another thing all together and it's terrible business idea.

None of their CEOs have came out and talked shite about poor or fat people. You couldn't be more wrong about Polo. They have a big and tall line and in recent years they have came out with styles tailored to a poorer segment of the US population.

I bet he just increased his sales to fat people. They'll buy it now just so they can say, "See? I'm not fat. I fit into A&F."

Abercrombie's corporate environment is very weird. The headquarters is in a town basicaly built from scratch by the guy that started the company, along with all the other limited brands, like victoria secret, etc... It's a very cultish type town for all the brands. each neighborhood is a majority of one brand or another. A&F has a transit bus system that goes around and picks people up from home, just like school busses. The busses are exactly like the stores, pumped with cologne and have a "hot" guy driving them.

Then at work they pretty much try to keep you there for 15-18 hr days, keeping you amped up on red bull and other energy drinks, all while playing the damn music and pumping in the cologne.

A friend of mine is a SVP of HR their and his wife is a lead designer

I wouldn't have a problem with it if we were talking about brooks brothers or vineyard vines or something, but A&F? A&F should be limited to fats and geeds.

A&F is a publicly traded company with a $4b+ mkt cap.

I actually applaud the guy for say what he thinks. This country is too damn politically correct and we need more people like him.

I don't shop at these stores but this makes me reconsider.

in doing so, he has reaffirmed what it's customer base already believes, and in turn strengthens its relationship with that customer base.

A&F has a specific market, they dont pander to the masses. They market to their demographic and develop products that market wants. They like telling people we dont want you. example, publicaly telling jersey shore people not to wear their brand.

Also, unlike most clothing companies, A&F doesnt really have a seasonal product cycle(Spring and fall), they develop new product on a continual basis. I want to say their design cycle is 3 weeks. which also indulges their market base. Like I said before, very weird corporate environment internally, but they are good at what they do

His business wont suffer for it. People who have been shopping there will continue to shop there. Those that weren't shopping there, well, they weren't likely to start.

Having a Big and Tall line doesn't necessarily mean that they're marketing to them though.

As far ast the "tailored to a poorer segment", I'm assuming that you mean the clothing they have that African Americans wear? Those styles still cost just as much, and more sometimes, than their other clothing. The Walmart shoppers demographic isn't buying from that line, that's for sure.

I sure don't see anyone on here complaining that Victoria's Secret doesn't sell anything above a large. They don't even have to come out and say that they don't want certain sizes wearing their clothing.
