Well, no not really. In fact, besides the 3 WTC buildings no fire has ever caused a steel high rise to collapse.

Not even this guy.

I'm not talking about fire, the presence of fire itself is almost irrelevant without context. I'm talking about the temperatures associated with the the combustion of the fuel that was in the airplanes that crashed into the buildings.

Two of the most common jet fuels used today are kerosene based mixtures (Jet Fuel A and Jet Fuel A-1). Kerosene itself has an accepted open air flame temperature of 990 degrees Celsius, and the jet fuel mixture has an adiabatic flame temperature (essentially the maximum temperature that the combustion process of the fuel could ever reach under either constant pressure or constant volume conditions) of 2,230 degrees Celsius. ( LINK) This gives us a working range for the temperatures of combustion we could expect to see. I believe estimations have placed the temperatures to be roughly 1,700 degrees.

Now, if you'll take a look at this chart experimentally determined by researchers who wanted to know the effect of compartment fires on structural steel:

You can easily see that even the low end of our working range drops structural steel to a tiny fraction of its nominal yield strength and its modulus of elasticity.

In laymen's terms, when the steel gets incredibly hot (not due to just any fire, but the temperatures associated with the combustion of volatile chemicals), it becomes not only incredibly weak but also incredibly prone to deformation.

And that doesn't even account for the structural damage due to planes flying into the building.

I wish him luck.

It's hard to argue with science and the mathy kind of science. Hope he's an expert in materials science or he's out of his element.

The links I posted basically went into detail about what happens to steel in an event like 9/11. Thanks for making it nice and pretty so the idiots would actually read it.

I dont know why you are being so hard on the guy. He went to a college that had engineering in the title

Sure he will.

He'll also be wrong and far out of his depth.

He should clearly get his money back.

Also, how many universities have you seen with engineering in the name?

Far more science supports the opposite of what he's purposing.
