Commentary: What is up with the cities along the Mississippi River? New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Louis aren't doing very well.

Memphis is seeing growth along the Mississippi border but its hampered by... well... being Memphis.

The suburbs on the Tenn. side of the border have pushed about as far away from the city as you can get. Memphis itself seems trapped in an endless cycle of "urban renewal" plans that can't quite pull it off. The Arkansas side of the river is covered by 8 miles of mud flats that are underwater twice a year until you get to West Memphis... which should be underwater year round.

I imagine St. Louis is hampered by most of the problems Memphis has. New Orleans, while a great place to visit, is, when you get down to it, in a swamp.

LOL

The stretch of land along I-40 between LR and Memphis is awful.

NW Arkansas makes up for it though.
