Just watched both channels 4 and 5 fortheir 6 o’clock news cast and not a single mention of the game tomorrow. I would think 10s of thousands people would be intersted. This is part of the reason we have so much trouble recruiting in STL. But they’ll probably remind everyone next week how much better bama is than us.

Heck they could mention the illini as well. That would also be helpful in recruiting...for us.

Mizzou will always be a distant third or lower in a pro sports state. It's just the way it is.

Look, It's not the media's job to give Mizzou good PR.

MAYBE Mizzou should do a better job promoting itself in St Louis and Kansas City. Maybe Odom should do a better job promoting his program period.

Maybe, possibly, probably.

But STL media has always seemed blind deaf and dumb when it comes to Mizzou. KC media covers them at least as much as anyone else

Who said anything about good PR? I said coverage. And coverage that’s relevant to 50,000 Mizzou alumni in the St. louis area. Plus the people like me who didn’t go there but still love the team. They don’t have say positive things about Mizzou, just report.

It actually IS the media’s job to give Mizzou coverage. They simply neglect it.

It's easy to blame the media but it starts at the top.

When Odom started losing last year he childishly quit doing his statewide scheduled media committments. Then they had to all but beg him to start doing them again this year (which he is), but he shouldn't have shirked them in the first place. It's one of the aspects of being the head coach that he handled like a coordinator. "My team sucks and they want me to answer questions about it?? I don't need this. Eff it."

I'm sure he quit doing local media to try to fix what was ailing the team, but it was bush league and it cuts both ways. You can't tell the media "screw this" and then expect them to give you priority coverage when it's convenient to you or you need something.

The same holds true to Mizzou's Media Relations department. Someone I know in the media was trying to get 10 minutes with Josh Huepel during the recruiting season to talk about his offense, his offensive philosophies, etc. It was going to be pure fluff and hype to get people excited to see his high flying offense in person and it took weeks get him on the phone for 10 effing minutes. Complete and total bullshite.

Cuonzo Martin, on the other hand, understands what the local media wants and needs and makes himself available for weekly chats in-season and multiple availabilities during the off-season. He gets it and conducts himself as a professional. Brand building demands a regular, consistent committment of time with the media.

So before people bitch about a lack of consistent coverage look no further than how the head coaches of our two major programs discharge their responsibilites.

Well said. And do you know who else (albeit non MU) is working feverishly to promote his program ?: Travis Ford...so it's no wonder why college basketball is making a comeback in the state.

When Mizzou was winning in 2013 and 2014, coverage was plentiful on 101 in STL. Dedicating time for a winner is easy.

Very true. Ford gets it too.

They're looking for sound bites to build a story around to fill their time/column. That's it.

And I can't speak to the western part of the state, but the St. Louis media wants to promote these teams. There's no Mike Wallace laying in the weeds to play "got'cha" or embarrass them. They'll ask an occasional tough question or ask for an explanation of what went wrong, but it's done respectfully and then dropped if the coach dances around it with a generic answer.

College football coaches in particular want to have it both ways. They want big league coverage until it's time to answer tough questions, then they want small town treatment and get offended or pissed off and try to intimidate them or cut access.

If you're Nick Saban you can play that game. If you're a program like Mizzou it's not a smart play.

Mizzou claims to be this great journalism school, and it doesn’t utilize its vast array of contacts to even just promote the school and its athletics within the damn state of Missouri. That’s just sad.

STL media is shite though. And I’d tske the current KC for living everyday of the week. If it wasn’t for the Cardinals there’d be no reason to go there.
