Hey all, hopefully my internet cooperates this week, lets get to it!
1st Quarter
Mizzou starts with the ball and does something I haven't seen in a couple years, the Tight End with multiple catches in a row. Mauk was throwing laser beams to Culkin and he was catching them with ease, something I hope to see a lot this year. The drive stalls a bit after an outside run against a 3 man front for a couple, a Mauk scramble for nothing, and then a dropped pass by Hunt. Mauk put the ball where only the receiver could get it as far as I'm concerned and Hunt straight dropped it. It would have put Mizzou inside scoring range.
First defensive series looks great, Golden and the defense stuffed the run and kept the pressure on the QB. Toledo WR made a great catch which was somehow ruled incomplete. Mizzou D gives the offense great field position.
Next offensive possession starts with a WR screen to White which netted nothing. Hunt makes a nice catch and run, Hans with a great run, the guys explosiveness through holes is great to watch, Mizzou up quickly 7-0.
Mizzou defense starts off playing 10 yards off the receivers, which is typical for us, but still makes no sense to me. If we played 5-6 yards off I feel we would give our pass rushers more time to get to the QB. Instead a lot of short passes and screens by Toledo are very effective. Mizzou forces a punt after Webb misses an interception.
Mizzou starts it's next possession with a Mauk draw and another Hunt drop, his second in 1/2 a quarter. Murphy with a great cut back for the first down. Big time play maker in our backfield this year. Mauk needs to do something different when he runs out of bounds, twice in two weeks he's taken a weird hit as he goes sideways/backwards, looks awkward and dangerous to me. Hunt misses a drop ball, he needs to be more physical in traffic, not his best quarter so far. Mauk is sacked, not really an oline issue as they sent 5 and then a 6th man came late to hit Maul for the Sack, coverage was solid by Toledo. Mizzou punts again, at this point the game looks like it's going to be another offensive struggle.
Toledo continues to chip away at short throws, so far the Mizzou line has been stout against the run. The very next play Hunt goes 38 yards for a touchdown. I don't know what our linebackers were doing on that play but it was terrible. Scherer basically ran into his blocker and let hunt run right by him, Brothers wasn't much better on the other side. Plays like this make me really worried when Mizzou plays a good SEC rushing team, it almost looked there we didn't have a 2nd level on the field. Golden almost chased the guy down though, which was probably the most impressive thing about the play.
Mauk starts Mizzou's next drive with a deep ball that White goes up and gets, it wasn't a bad throw per se, it just seemed to have a little bit too much air on it, if Mauk throws it down field and on a line White might have a TD. Culkin drops a poor throw from Mauk after a short Hans run, it seemed to me that Mauk put a little too much juice on the swing pass. Hunt makes a nice catch to get inside the 10. The line looks great on one play and then bad the very next, luckily Mauk uses his legs and floats a nice pass to White for the TD, a really nice play by Mauk.
Toledo starts with a QB draw for a good bit of change, it was a nice play that caught Mizzou off gaurd, two guys took out Golden and still had to hold him. Toledo should just throw the ball for 5 yards every play, they would never get stopped by Mizzou's defense. Sadly for them they seemed incapable of throwing and catching the 5 yard passes. Mizzou's defense doesn't look bad so far, they're playing pretty soft coverage and other then the one long run by Hunt the tackling has been good.
The next Mauk interception/fumble recovery was just ugly, I heard Pinkel blamed it on Culkin for running the wrong route, Sasser does a great job getting it back, the game could have gone a much different direction at this point.
2nd Quarter
Mizzou starts the 2nd quarter with the ball deep in their own territory after the turnover exchange. Mizzou tries a jet sweep and it ends poorly, we're really bad at going outside with the running game, seems like the blocking scheme is off. Mauk panics a little on the next play and makes a shitty throw. Mizzou punts.
Mizzou's defense destroys the Toledo line on the next series, Golden and Ray are all over their QB, he throws a terrible pass that Penton intercepts easily. Our pass rush is beyond exceptional.
Mauk quickly throws the ball down the field to Sasser. Mauk has great touch on balls down the field, if he could get that same touch to short passes look out. A great play call by Henson on the naked boot, Toledo was sold on the run up the middle.
Ely is underthrowing the ball quite a bit, a lot of it is he's rushing because he has very little time. Constant pressure is causing mistakes. That and the clap/snap shite that Toledo was doing is about the most obvious thing I've ever seen. Mizzou rush defense completely falls a part on the next few plays. Ruise and Scherer get annihilated multiple times on the drive leaving huge holes up the middle. These guys need to work on shedding block and stopping up the gaps. Secondary makes some nice plays on the goal line, but Golden blows up the play and destroys Toledo's drive.
Special teams with a nice FG block.
Next drive starts with a couple nice runs, and then a terrible cut back play. I really wish Henson would stick with the down hill plays, the outside stuff is not working for Mizzou. Moore drops a beautiful Mauk pass, something there has been way too much of in this game. Absolutely perfect throw from Mauk though.
Mizzou's defense plays a good series, Golden is cheating somehow at this point, I think he plugged in the game genie. Toledo is really poor at throwing short quick passes. Murphy with an awesome return, I expect 2-3 more return TD's from him this year, he looks great.
Mauk throws two nice passes and Mizzou scores again. When this offense connects, they make it look easy.
Toledo's QB/WR don't seem to be in sync much in the first half, Toledo does gash Mizzou with a screen. DLine continues to get intense pressure on Ely, somehow he hasn't been sacked 5 times in the first half. Mizzou sniffs out a screen to force a punt. Flashbacks to the USC game fade.
Hans goes airborne on a nice outside run, one of the few that has been successful. Mizzou's 2 minute drill involves a lot of running, assuming that it was by design but it seemed very conservative when Pinkel could have stepped on their throats. Just didn't seem to be much ingurency by the offense at all. Mauk takes a few hits I would rather he didn't, but that's his style, hopefully he is more rugged than Franklin. Holding call on Hall really kills a drive that Mizzou started to gain some momentum on, Pinkel packs it in to end the half.
I'm going to eat dinner and I'll start on the 2nd half.

3rd Quarter
Defense starts well, getting after the QB and forcing bad throws. Anytime Toledo tries a deeper pass it's usually covered and inaccurate. Mizzou forces a quick punt.
Murphy shows off some good moves through out this drive, including the nice TD screen. Mauk got away with a pass that he lofted into the end zone. I think he forgets that he's not throwing to DGB anymore. Nice long sustained drive that saw a little bit of everything, I was impressed with the running game.
Toledo continues to drop passes on it's next drive, Mizzou is giving them a 10 yard cushion and Toledo can't take advantage it. I think Mizzou starts to get a little conservative on defense here, it's kind of expected when you're up 28 and rolling, that killer instinct isn't a Pinkel trait. Honestly I think up until this point the secondary and the line have both played very well. A few big plays but nothing that really had me worried. Toledo starts to take advantage of Mizzou's soft coverage. Then another total linebacker botch occurs and Kent runs for a long TD, I don't know who #25 is on the defense off the top of my head, but absolutely terrible. I'm assuming the defense was starting to sub in the backups, cause the 3 linebackers on the field for that play didn't look like they had any clue what was going on.
Pretty awful series from Mizzou, a short run, a sack, and then an bad throw that ends in a nice INT by the DB. Mauk should have scrambled or just taken the sack.
Toledo seems to have gained some momentum at this point, the field position has them threatening almost immediately, the pass rush and coverage disappear and Toledo scores easily on a run by hunt. The tackling, pass rush, and coverage was bad all around. The defense might be a little gassed here as they had to basically defend a long drive and then go right back out on defense. Buttholes tighten in Mizzou nation.
So at this point Mizzou has hit another lull much like in the SDSU game, and then Mauk does what Mauk does and nails a long pass to Sasser and then a short one for the TD. It's that easy sometimes, I really expect for future teams who play Mizzou to have some super deep corners, this could really open up the run game for the Tigers.
I'm going to group the rest of the game together as it slowed down a lot in the 4th quarter. Obviously Mizzou wàsn't quite in garbage time but the game to me never really felt close. Toledo could never really get it's passing game going in stride, even with the big cushion given to them by Mizzou. Defensive line continues to make plays, especailly the big 2 of Ray and Golden, they just dominated the two tackles through the game. The run defense wasn't bad the rest of the wày and honestly if you take away the two long runs by Hunt the damage was pretty minimal. The offense actually looked sharp with the big lead, something I didn't really expect from a Pinkel team, I'm assuming he didn't want to take any chances with his old team. All in all it was a really good win for the Tigers on the road. I was impressed early and often with the pass rush and the play of Mauk. If this team can do three things, eliminate the big runs, stop dropping passes, and having a few "Maukments", I think this team has a very good shot at competing with UGA for the East title.
As always, Go Tigers!
P.S Sorry for the grammar/spelling it's late here and I need to get some sleep.
Ciao.

Spot on and good job Cruise, funny how we see problems like the CB cushion but we have stuck with it for years. This game at least Toledo could not hit the passes. Against efficient teams though that drives me nuts, have flashbacks to Texas circa 2008.

As always, good stuff TC. Always appreciate your work and I know it's time consuming...so thanks a ton for providing that for us.

Thanks for the hard work.
What do you see as the source of the occasional problems with the interior run defense?

Purely linebackers not hitting their gaps. Every large run saw our linebackers get completely wiped out(counters/traps mostly). There was very little block shedding. Also the biggest issue seemed to be that since we were playing such deep coverage, if the RB managed to get past the line of scrimmage, there was literally no one there for the tackle. The safeties were barely involved in the run game due to the coverage cushion. The interior line played well in my eyes, they stuffed the run more times then not, the biggest issue was linebackers committing to early or getting wiped out and there being nothing left in the 2nd level.

good review of the game... spot on about the linebackers and gap control. they have to improve on that. period. In Moore's defense on the "dropped" long pass from Mauk, that should have been a pass interference call on the Toledo DB as he had ahold of Moore's right arm, preventing him from pulling the ball in.
