The Missouri OOC scheduling philosophy

Do you think Pinkel's model to play 2 non-power 5 opponents, 1 average at best power 5 opponent, and an FCS opponent has gave a false sense of security because they win those games?
Another thing our OOC philosophy effects is the perception angle. The national narrative matters and not being on the big stage hurts us from that perspective. It has held us out of BCS games in the past (2007, 2013) and last year out of the New Years six bowls.
In recruiting we have no marquee opponent that drives buzz to the program. The early season game that puts our players on that big stage for millions to see in a different TV market. We have the mizzoumade narrative which drives the high 3 stars our way in droves but we are starting to see the talent gap in the east tighten even more where the best athletes on the field will normally win those games.

I don't think our OOC schedule has held us out of BCS or other big games - losing our conference championship games did that.
I'd like to see a big early game scheduled - but only if we can get a quicker start. For whatever reason, pinkel's teams don't look ready early. They don't come out of camp ready to play big-boy football, they need the tune-up games. The way he schedules gives us our best shot at 10+win season. An early loss wouldn't help us.
As far as recruit goes - I've said from the day we made our move that we need a lights-out closer with SEC recruit experience on staff. We don't have one. We may also need to learn how to correctly use a bagman.

Mizzou's OOC is really similar to a majority of P5 schools. We don't have any natural in state rivalries like the schools from Florida, Goergia, & South Carolina.

Lol at the bagman semo...
I was trying to say that our perception hurts us in the big picture. So when we finish 2nd in our conference after a championship game loss the BCS/New Years six bowl bids don't go our way because they normally look at Missouri as a bad draw from a financial standpoint.
Having that established footprint beforehand where we see our team play and beat a UCLA or a Clemson can help create another narrative.

We also don't have the established built in strong brand those schools have created. It's not based on actual on field w's and l's, which our program has done well in, but by how the media talks about our program.
When Paul Finebaum on Saturday has the balls to say "Missouri is overrated and have been able to back there way into the championship game" that forms the narrative of our program. When ESPN/SECNetwork doesn't acknowledge that we have earned our wins vs our opponents but instead pump up stat lines like "Arkansas is a force to be reckoned with as they won 2 out of their last 3 games and Tennessee is close to becoming a power again as they have won 4 out of their last 5" with losses to us that undermines our program.
If we were to beat a top 15-20 Team in the first 2 weeks in addition to our SEC schedule you have to speak in a different light about our program. Right now you have the Finebaum narrative of "They should be embarrassed as an SEC school with their opening schedule" as the negative talking point of our program.
And you may not like guys like him but he has a voice that reaches millions and that voice is in the living rooms or cars of both recruits, coaches, and the playoff committee.

I don't disagree. It's the IF that's the issue. Lose that big game, and what's the narrative then? At least this way, we've racked up solid records. Winning records, individual player records. And the talking heads can't deny the way our defense has developed talent.
Obviously I don't like hearing that nonsense from Finebaum. He bashes everyone though. This year Tennessee and Auburn were the media darlings, and Arkansas to an extent. How's that working out?

Eh. There's a lot of navel gazing over perception. Win on the field and it takes care of itself.
15 years ago, no announcer would have said "the Mizzou coaching staff turns out NFL prospect after NFL prospect." If we can win a conference championship, the perception will change. Until then, we're likely at our ceiling for perception.

The initial question, "is the perception wrong and hurting us" is probably the right way to look at it. The problem is we haven't really shown we are better than what the perception is. SEMO is right, if we win the CC that is a difference maker and obviously changes the next game(what bowl) we get. It's not the main problem we are going to see going forward. IF we beat Indiana soundly last year and give Bama all they could handle, losing a close one in ATL, we are then the team that just missed the final 4. Is it a better bowl then? I guess but whats the real difference now, going forward, you're either in or your out. Sure Citrus is a good deal better than Shreveport, but what's the real impact, not that much. They both give you a "bowl season" and the extra month of practice and some extra income though I think the conference does an even split with it.
So yes, perception is, sometimes reality, and Mizzou has to win BIG games much more often if we are going to be included in the "power programs" talk. Tennessee and Kentucky have both out recruited us recently and you can see now that it's not going to be the case that Pinkel can just "coachem up" and win these games anyway.

So going along with this line of thinking who would we want to get on the schedule?
I have always hoped of playing Nebraska in KC on a yearly basis, but I think that might help them more than us. Should we start scheduling Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech?
I am not sure why Mizzou won't schedule an ACC game or someone else in the South (for recruiting). We have Purdue on the schedule in the future though
