The Football Program: Stay The Course Or Take More Risks?

Jeff Gordon wrote a column today on Mizzou's OOC scheduling, the overall state of Pinkel's program, and what it might require to become a bona fide national power.
LINK
The general premise is in order to be a top tier program Missouri would (likely) have to take more risks with OOC scheduling and recruit higher upside (and sketchier) athletes. The upside being to take the elusive final step to achieve a Big 6 level vs. jeopardizing the well-oiled machine Pinkel has spent 15 years in building.
Gordon brings up other points I'd love to see discussed here, but is generally advocating staying the course.
My question to the group is: in theory would you be willing to take more risks (I'm assuming under the next coaching hire) to become a national power program with the possible downside of losing our gains and returning to also ran status?

Few teams schedule harder OOC than Mizzou. Look at Baylor they have the weakest OOC every year.
Recruit better. Look at the talk around TBJ. Mizzou needs to get 3-4 athletes of that type every year.
Or they could stay the course. Mizzou has twice been 1 game away from a title game. Won division titles 5 of the last 8.

If they can regularly being classes like I think last years class will be, they'll get there. They can go after the same kind of kid but with more talent. Don't have to pursue kids that are a risk or already in trouble.
I would like to see the BYU's replaced with the ND's or tOSU's of the world but that's easier said than done

If scheduling philosophy changes it will be 5-6 years in the future before it changes.
Mizzou making the next step may very well come down to who Rhodes chooses as GPs replacement. Kids growing up now only remember Mizzou winning. So if Rhodes makes the right choice, then Mizzou could take a trajectory very similar to what Oregon has taken.

Runner ups are only remembered by their fans. We need a few more recruits to compete with the Alabamas of college football. We just gotta win this conference. That's first.

Risks need to be taken to achieve that championship. We are die hard fans, we recognized the great job Pinkel is doing and we view our program through black and gold colored lenses. The reality of us being an elite team the competes for national titles is much different though.
1. We dont want to admit it but we need to recruit at a better clip than we are currently. As much of an issue we have with the actual individual rating systems they are a sure fire predictor for who will actually win the national title.
We have won divisions but have not competed well against those top tier programs in the actual championship game and talent combined with some coaching mishaps caused our downfall.
Another reason we need to beef up recruiting is because we need the national attention that brings. Just look at what is happening with Ole Miss for instance. Being talked about is big in the world of recruiting and selling your program. We currently count on our coaches to be our biggest advocates on the recruiting trail, while the blue bloods and elites can use ESPN and its 'experts' to help sell theirs.
Which leads me to number 2:
That is why we need to schedule a perceived national power. A program that has brand recognition. We need the tone of how our program is viewed in the national narrative because although we may hate it and think winning solves all ill wills there is still a major marketing part of this involved. (I personally believe that is the only reason Ohio State got in over TCU). Tickets need to be sold for these major bowls, it is the reason a program like Missouri can play in the SEC title game and get left out of the bigger bowls. If an Alabama or Florida loses in our position, especially in 2013, they still get invited to those group of 6 bowls. (We were the 2nd best team in our league but the Chic Fil A bid went to Ole Miss?)
We all currently hear about we should get more respect on these sports shows but then they give us these back handed compliments and low blows on the other.
Winning, combined with a marquee OOC win, and top 10-20 consistent recruiting changes all of that.
