I have been one of the biggest critics of student attendance. If every student(30,000 grad and post grad) had attended the game it still would have been a very poor attendance.

Yesterday’s attendance was just sad. We can blame it on a holiday weekend, but that should help with attendance. We can blame it on MLB baseball, but we all know that is just a big excuse.

I have came to the theory that it’s not just student attendance or people from STL/KC/COMO not attending games.

I believe it has to do with many fans not associating rivalries with the members of the SEC. Mizzou was in the same conference(changed names 5 times) for over 100 years.

Apathy is a tough thing to overcome. It takes time for it to set in and even longer to break it.

That doesn’t say anything about why no one shows up for non-con games.

Same problem with Missouri.

Win, and people show up. That’s all.

Student attendance and winning will help, but to get the fans to games we need rivals which brings more excitement to the entire season.

A fan is also going to want their rivals to lose. Even now we want Kansas, Illinois, Oklahoma, and other Big 12 opponents to lose every game.

Many people grew up with these rivalries and still hate them today. Without these rivalries it causes the mediocre fans to care less about the games. They will still like/love Mizzou, but there will be less excitement about who they are playing against and the season. These people will stay at home and watch most games instead of going to a 1 or 2 games a year.

I see Kansas, Oklahoma, Okie State, K-state Texas fans almost everyday. It’s not as easy to talk shite to a former rival and not as fun when there is very little chance we will play.

I see Jeff Boschee a couple times a week at our kids daycare. I will talk shite sometimes and he will say something back. I was going to put a Mizzou sticker on his SUV, but my wife said “NO” something about how she had to work with him.

We need rivals outside of Arkansas to make fans more excited about the entire season.

Just a theory

We’re simply never gonna have the hate we had for those programs. Sure SEC fans can be bloody annoying and the more southern and conservative they are, the more annoying they get. But outside of Tenn, I don’t go out of my way rooting for teams to lose like the Big shite schools you listed.

Arkansas is a forced rival.

If anything, our rival options are SC and UGA.

It would be nice if we could play Arkansas in Springfield every year, but Mo State’s football stadium only seats about 16,600.

It would be nice if Bass Pro could renovate it to host a bowl game and Arkansas and Mizzou game. They paid a little over $80 million to renovate Bass Pro’s Wonders of Wildlife. John Morris is worth over $5 billion so it wouldn’t hurt him to much.

SC games are just to far(around 900 miles) for the average fan to travel to. I went to the Independence Bowl in 2005 and they did not travel well. Mizzou had more fans.

A new rivalry built solely from geographical proximity just does nothing for me. I’ll never give a shite about KUs uglier cousin.

On the other hand I loved in South Carolina for two years and hated damn near every moment of it. So I have the hate part of the rivalry down.

Plus the “shouldn’t have lost those games” part as well.

Also have a sister in law whose a Cocks fan so. Reasons.

No reasons for the Hogs.

I grew up about a mile from Arkansas. I couldn’t stand Arkansas long before we joined the SEC. More people from my high school went to Arkansas over Mizzou.

My sister-in-law graduated from Arkansas and her family is always talking shite even though we lead the series 6-3.

Everyone has different experiences, but we need a good rival and Arky is the closest SEC school we have.

It still pisses me of that the Waltons gave/give much more money to Arkansas than Mizzou. The Walton’s grew up in the Columbia area. Sam graduated from Hickman and Mizzou.

Even a friendly rival like the Cardinals and Cubs have would be better than nothing. Arkansas fans on our board are pretty good.
