What say the board about Johnathan Johnson returning punts, especially in a game with a significant lead.

With Floyd out there isn't anyone of his caliber and skillset at his position.

I understand we want sure-hands back there even if we're fair-catching.

I understand a punt return for TD can change a game.

I understand JMac did it here and talented people do it all over the country.

But how often is JJ going to return a punt?

Is it worth the injury risk?

It seems unnecessary when you have 80+ athletes on a roster.

How is no-one else valued enough to handle that dirty work?

And then when you want to roll the dice with your A-guy, put him out there when you really could use a return TD.

They put someone in that had prior experience and might progress. Nothing more. They didn’t have much of a choice otherwise. They needed to see what was working and had to start there

Johnson is terrible at it and he's far from the "safe choice". He lets far too many balls hit the ground.

I'd actually go with Hilton. I know for a fact that he is going to catch the ball.

I'm not a Hilton fan but I would be for giving him a go back there. It just might be where he can contribute most. And I mean that very positively.

If JJ is terrible then it's even more reason to not use him there.

But, no, he's not terrible. He's the best dancer on the team. His little steps. Shake. Bake. He gets out of a jammed phone booth better than anyone who could return punts for us - that's why the coaching staff has him there.

Aren't we thin in the secondary? Not sure I'd want Hilton doing it either.

I don't get how on a roster of 80+ people how there isn't an athlete who can routinely catch a punt and hopefully offer some hope of a positive return who isn't a primary asset at his position.

Johnson is terrible, that's why he was removed from that duty last year. Yes, he's very shifty and fast. In theory he should be a good punt returner but he isn't. He consistently cost us field position time after time last year and even muffed a couple. That's the whole reason Floyd even got his shot.

I mean, we have several other guys that can do it. This is one coaching decision I'm thoroughly not on board with.

Thompson and Gicinto could handle the duties. Burning a RS year for 5-6 touches a game makes little sense, though. Blanton and Albert may be on the field enough to make reps for Gicinto tough to find after the 4th non con. They need someone that can secure the ball. Johnson is a liability in the return game.

Didn’t Johnson run backwards 20 yards on a PR on Saturday?

I'm not saying he's a great returner.

I'm saying he's the best phone booth dancer on the team and without Floyd I can see why he's the staffs choice.

At the same time I'm saying why someone who's so valuable to the offense being put in a risky spot at PR, especially if he's not outstanding there.

Yeah. Not good.

But in that process we saw him dance.

Guy has the shakes and subtle movements that make for a good PR.

I'd prefer we save this guy for touches on offense.

I think we all agree on that.

He should have fair caught that as he was hit as soon as he caught the ball.

The score. The opponent. Game 1.

That should be a red-light from the staff.

Well I did a few Punt returns and KO returns and I can tell you my biggest fear was the wind blowing at the worst moment, or catching the ball in the rain, stuff like that.

What about pterodactyls' grabbing the ball mid-punt?

That must've been unnerving.
