Pinkel under contract through 2020

Six more years. Good for stability. I was hoping Henson would be groomed to take over for GP and keep some continuity in transitioning to a new head coach but I'd guess he'll be gone before 2020 rolls around.
Thoughts on the contract? Good? Bad? Don't care?

I like it because I like Pinkel. When you look at his record at Mizzou, the question is this: Does anyone actually think Mizzou can do better?
I mean, if we were to completely open up the bank and offer someone a record contract, maybe. But that isn't going to happen.
I think we should thank God that a coach like Pinkel made Mizzou his destination job. To be honest, I worry about the post Pinkel years.

Plus, Henson probably wouldn't jump into a major head coaching job immediately. He'll probably go to a lower level school to build his resume and then at some point jump to a major program.
Who knows, even if Henson leaves Mizzou for a HC job, he may come back to Mizzou when Pinks retires.

Yeah, it's not Pinkel I am worried about. I thought with his old contract going through 2017, it would allow for a smooth transition to Henson in the post-Pinkel era. Recruiting is impacted little with that kind of transition. The only down side I see is that we probably lose Henson at some point before 2020. Got no problems with Pinkel himself getting a new deal. I just have to stretch a bit to find something negative in it so I guess that means it's all good.

For those of us that are "not worried about Pinkel", check all threads from a year ago because A LOT of people wanted his arse gone.

Me included Wtodd. If I said, not worried about Pinkel, those might not have been the right words. I worry about everyone, every year. I think Pinkel earned the new contract though. I still am a little iffy about it being extended out to 2020. That's 6 years out and at least 3 years past when he said he wanted to stop coaching. He'll have to be damn near 70 by then. Not going to lose sleep over it, but if I worry about anything, it's just the length.

I was wishy washy day-to-day in 2012, but in the back of my mind I always thought can we do better?
And every time I answered it with a definitive no we cannot.

He has to have a contract that covers the time any of his recruits are here. Recruits could interpret that a coach only under contract through 2017 means they won't be around for their full time here.
Having said that, Pinkel can retire any time he wants and I am sure that anyone that needs to know that information already does.
Hypothetically speaking, if he is going to retire at 65 (leaving his contract early) the school could easily work behind the scenes to make sure Henson stayed around.

I guess if Henson was to receive a large raise that seemed abnormally higher than most OC's get paid, that could be a sign that Pink's will retire soon.

Yeah. I view this as a stability move more than Pinkel needing to work until 2020. Could be wrong, but that's just me.
You never know how personal finances impact these decisions and he is writing large checks to an ex now.

We used to give that old fart Bill Snyder at KSU crap for being old, but he used to kick our arse.
If he does not go back to the "Young" GP and keep adapting and changing I have no problem with the contract.

I knew last year was an anomaly because of the injuries. My only question with GP is "is he a wartime consigliere"; can he bring us a conference champioinship & NC.

NO
I don't see anything in his coaching history that makes me think he can. If MU wants to win a SEC championship it would have to be with a different HC

Meh, he got close this year and we were, once again, likely within a game of the NC. Sometimes it takes breaks to make it happen for non traditional powerhouses. Hell, it often takes the right breaks for traditional powerhouses too.
I was on the "give him another year" wagon last year, we did, and Mizzou went to Atlanta when most people were expecting a .500 season.
In summary, nobody knows shite ever. He's done fine for the football program/the school overall and deserves as much time as he wants, as long as the program is winning.

Mizzou can't do better. Pinkel is the guy.
Don't forget that he won a championship with Don James. He's been there before, which is more than most coaches. He wants to get back there before he retires...and I truly believe he will.

This is a good point.
I have a wrench to throw into this, though.
Is the old formula of leaving to take head coaching jobs at low-mid tier schools the best in this day and age?
Why go out to Wyoming and try to make a winner of a program when you can stay as a coordinator at a major school in a major conference and still be hired as a head coach in a major conference.
A guy like Kirby Smart is going to take over a major program in the future. That Stanford guy is taking over an SEC team in Vanderbilt. It just seems dumb to leave the big time to try and make a name for yourself in the small time when it's unnecessary.

I also think this kind of extension is designed to help recruiting in the coming years, it doesn't necessarily mean Pinks will be here till '20.
Kids want to commit knowing their coach is under contract for their full 4 years.
I could see Pinkel handing the program off to Henson under certain circumstances before '20.
With the way things go nowadays, I'd be open to transitioning these types of head coaches into patriarch roles with the program. Making them sort of the president, a liaison between the team and the AD. Now I'm just rambling.

This has a UGA/Richt feel to it. Most want to keep him but there are times that people want him gone.

Pinkel and Richt are almost the exact same person. They both interviewed for the job, and Mizzou passed on Richt for Pinkel.
Alden certainly has a type.
