I get why people (a few) are excited due to the ESPN fluff story about how great of a recruiter he is. However the RockM piece by Snelling suggests that info came from a former High School teammate who is also a former co-worker of his.

Said friend said he doesnt rely on stars (good) when recruiting as he found a two star player that got drafted in the first round. Thats great but if he's relying on that one time to hang his recruiting hat on then we are screwed. A bunch of two star players arent competing in the SEC. No coach finds nothing but diamonds when hitting the two star market. Even for the idiots that think otherwise stars DO MATTER.

Was that LeBron James? Who grew up in Ohio?
Plus, you got to be kidding me when you are talking about Cleveland State to Mizzou! Which school will be easier to attract better players?

Depends on who Cleveland State hires.

He appears to be a decent recruiter. He was not as successful as Frank Haith as a recruiter and assistant, however.

Most of the stuff floating around now is just garbage complaining or garbage fluff.

I think that if he comes in like Drink and conveys an actual vision for the program and gets a couple recruiting wins under his belt, the narrative could change quickly (more quickly than results on the floor change).

Did you remember the time when Nick Saban was so pissssed when fans started to leave early after a blowout win? He said if you do not want to stay for the whole time, please give the ticks to someone that want to be there for the whole game. He said that due to top recruits visiting the game and need fans there the whole game to give recruits the feel of great football atmosphere in general.

Uh huh. And that’s Alabama football.

Not Missouri basketball. Our fans are long-suffering and they have suffered long. And the Administration evidently doesn’t care.

Maybe the AD wants Mizzou to fail so that Mizzou will be forced to leave SEC? This might be what fans are going to be in the dark for a long time. Then either the AD gets fired or fans will sit out until changes are made from the top.

They matter less in basketball, but they still matter.

The thing that bother me more about Gates than anyone is the parallels with Cuonzo.

quote:

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Gates comes from an underprivileged inner-city area (West Chicago), attended a rigorous academic institution for college (California), had a short pro career and got into coaching. The bulk of his coaching career focused on a style of basketball which prides itself on defense and toughness (Florida State). Sounds a lot like the last guy, right? So it would almost seem like the Administration loved everything about Cuonzo Martin, except for his recruiting. So they went and found a guy who is almost Cuonzo Martin, but with a little different pedigree on the recruiting side.

frick…

One of the things I disliked most about Cuonzo was the style of play. It’s just fricking boring. I hope this isn’t the case with Gates. I’m tired of hearing about defense. Get some guys that can put the ball in the basket!

Also, Cuonzo had some weird obsession with unathletic players. This is basketball get some long athletes who can run and jump. Get some guards who can create of their dribble.

I hated the hire initially and even after cooling down I still really don’t like it, but he’s the coach so as a fan it’s either have some hope or just resign yourself to sucking for 3-4 more years

He did have a good, even really good, turnaround at Cleveland St but they play in a very bad league and the way he did it was not sustainable long term. Last year his top 8 players were all seniors. No wonder he wanted to leave. That roster was going to be a mess, but so is this one so he’s got his work cut out for him.

I do believe he can win the support of the fans but that has to be done before the games even start. Get Aiden Shaw back and go kill it in the portal. Then people will come around

Only potential hope is Gates went to a powerhouse of a basketball school in Chicago and one of his high school teammates played at mizzou (Najeeb Echols). So Echols should be in his ear explaining how much mizzou basketball means to the fans/alumni. Najeeb was there when we were good.
