My whole problem is you have people making decisions like they did this weekend. Leap frogging.
Take the rankings out of the equation all together. Take "x" amount of conference champions, have them matchup by draw. Then all the runner ups can play each other in bowl matchups. The good teams will wind up playing each other at some point.
If you're not in a conference or your conference does not have a CCG, your outside looking in. Better get a CCG matchup or join a conference.
Thats for starters.

Why is it now an issue of not having a championship game? The Pac-10 and Big 10 didn't until the last 3 years. The Big 12 had one until the last 3 years.
Because the playing field has changed. And now the big 12 is the only power 5 conference without a championship. And it's the smallest of the power 5 conferences with only 10 teams. In the BCS era, it wasn't as important. But now with the playoff...they play 1 less game than other playoff contenders, who play in their championship. And they arguably got screwed by the committee. Part of that is that the committee obviously protected the blue blood tOSU. The other part, IMO, is the lack of that championship. I don't think it's coincidence that the 4 playoff teams are all champions of their respective conferences.
You can argue that TCU should not have been jumped, and I agree completely. But as a big 12 member, I think they had the weakest backing of the contenders. Imagine if Mizzou had pulled the upset - can you imagine the committee daring to leave Alabama off that slate? Mike Slive would not have allowed that to happen. The big 12 commish doesn't have that kind of juice.
Bottom line, a 4-team playoff isn't going to last. It will go to at least 8 teams, and I don't think it'll take many years to get there.

The big 12 is a joke, and always a few years behind the curve. The entire conference structure and model is flawed. From refusing to launch a conference network, to their unequal revenue sharing model, to it's failure to respond to key departures with appropriate expansion to the cessation of its conference game, they have simply destroyed themselves. Well, actually, Texas has destroyed a very solid conference with its greed. And as a spectator it is both sad and funny to watch. I still feel badly for Iowa State though.
Semo you are in my head. (well written and exactly how I feel, even the bit about Iowa State)

It's a weird system. The Big 12 has no one in the playoffs, but they'll still get a $50M payday from it. I agree that the 4 team playoff won't last long. If you went to 6 teams, you could have 5 power conference winners and an at-large and only increase the bowls involved by two.

SEMO - The Big 8 knew what Texass did to the SWC and STILL let them in with dollar signs in their eyes. They are reaping what they sowed. I am so glad that Mizzou escaped that train wreck when it did.

The Big 12 is the odd man out mostly because they choose to be. TCU and Baylor are both solid football teams but their woeful OOC schedule and the lack of a championship game hurt them. For the record I think if Mizzou had stayed in that conference you beat both teams this year. They drove you off. Frick 'em.

Eh. TCU's overall SoS is better than tOSU. The Big 12 screwed the pooch.

I don't, we got jobbed out of several hoops games at their place, a football game too. Let them get their just desserts.
