I just think that a guy like Mullen takes that job at MSU because he has no other ties to the SEC. He is a northerner that went to college in Pennsylvania. He is a little bit older than Smart, I think a guy like Smart is tabbed to take over an elite SEC school in the near future.
Here is the thing. I think Smart will turn into a great coach. He just won the assistant coach of the year award. If he came I was wondering if he would leave us in the future. But honestly if Alden sells it, he or any other top line coach can make Missouri into whatever job they want to. We are about to build a stadium bigger than Notre Dame's. A stadium bigger than Clemson's. No competition within the state. Honestly this job can be turned into whatever you want to make it into. Fan backing, Booster funding, high school producing, whatever.
Mike Alden is a salesman. And if he does his job, I dont see how you cant see the upside of being here.

Mubobby did say he didn't think he would be fired this year... a total blowout in Tamu could change that. I think he eluded to staff changes more than GP being torched.

I dont recall anything about Alden to Penn St. I do recall something about him interviewing for the UNC AD job last year.
Lets steal Gundy from Pickens St.

I actually think Mizzou could be very attractive to Kirby Smart. Alabama eventually wants him to be their HC after Saban retires, but that could be a ways off. Mizzou is a program looking to move to the next level, and prepared to make major investments into football if the insiders are to be believed. He would have a lot of support at Mizzou, and probably a bit more patience from the fans and AD than at some SEC schools. Columbia itself is a great place to raise a family, and Kirby has young kids. He calls Alabama's defensive plays, not Saban, and he's a fantastic recruiter. He's a guy with strong values, wants to win the right way - and that's a match for Mizzou. I actually think it would be a great fit. And, if he's happy and things go well at Mizzou, it might be tough to get him to leave.
That said, I think things are very up in the air as far as Pinkel goes. According to the insiders, staff changes are going to be forced regardless - how stubborn will Pinkel be about it? Will he make the changes, or go down with his staff in the ultimate show of loyalty? Pinkel has eroded the built-up good will he had among boosters and apparently the AD with his off-field shenanigans. If he fights on making staff changes, will they give him the ultimatum? Lots of unknowns.

I'm not sure what the purpose of explaining how great Smart is, we know that already. Its established.
My gut says Richt already has an exit plan and won't be around into his older years. Smart is ready now, but I think he could wait 2-3 years if those rumors about Richt retiring early are true.
I think he turned down the assistant coach job at UGA because he wanted to be able to start fresh when he becomes the HC.
Kirby Smart may be the most sought after assistant coach, I feel there will be better options than Mizzou available to him if he decides to make the jump.

Would Andy Reid come back home to Columbia?
Throw him 4 Million and give him the time he needs.

The way I'm reading this thread and hype on some of these coaches, and being this year may be slim pickins for a quality coach and I know this is a stupid idea but I gotta ask anyways....
What is Mizzou fans opinion of Mangino? He seemed to turn KU around with less than stellar players and might have been even more successful if not for his screw up.
OK, I'll shut up now and go back to lurking.

Who do you see then?
I see Pinkel staying but on a very hot seat, adjustments to the staff are likely.
I see Smart going nowhere unless it's an elite program.
Although a total train wreck at Kyle this weekend could change things, even with that I find it hard to believe Pinkel is fired.
Another wildcard in the deck is the off the field stuff, if there is more to it than we know already, then all bets are off and he could be gone.

LOL... Besides that. I mean, he did do some good coaching with sub-par talent. What could this guy do with say the talent Mizzou could wind up with or has now?
I'm not groveling over this guy, but he would come in under the radar, he is proven as a head coach, even though it ended on a bad note and it wasn't a long tenure.
Back to lurking....

JMO but hell No. Mangino was ok for kU, but remember their "History awaits" year in 2009. Didnt they go to the Insight? Now just imagine if Mangino was under huge pressure here? On top of that he completely insulted our biggest in-state recruiting base in St. Louis. That will never happen.
