Was he tabbed to be a redshirt from the beginning, or did he truly compete for the RB position and just didn't make it? I know they won't overreact to 1 game, but there just seemed to be no heart at the position after RH went down. I know the focus is Mauk/Lock, but finding a RB for the SEC schedule has to be a close second.

Walters will determine if anything changes. Walters is expected to be ready to play in the next 3-4 weeks. If Walters is good to go Doherty redshirts.

Forget Walters. That's nearly half way through the season before he's good to go.

I don't know if GP will do it, but if things continue as is, I wouldn't be surprised to see Doherty's redshirt get burned. If I recall correctly, I had read he had probably impressed the most of the "new" RB's.

I think they redshirted him because you knew you had:

1. Hansbrough - Obviously
2. Witter - I think the staff still hope their decision to play him last year was the right one.
3. Steward - Though hurt, he's back and gonna work into the depth chart somewhere.
4. Abbington - Though not on the depth chart, being a JUCO, he's gonna be available at all times.
5. Walters - Despite the injury, his redshirt is also gone so he's always gonna be available.
6. Hunt - Truthfully, he's probably our 2nd best back at this point so you know he's on the depth chart.

That's just a shite ton of RB's to admit you fricked up taking if you push Doherty ahead of them. If someone doesn't assert themselves this week though I would give some real consideration to burning Doherty's redshirt in the UConn or UK game.

Doherty was probably the most impressive RB through camp, but as reedus said...we have a shite ton of RBs and he really wasn't going to be given much of a chance to play.

Considering they all look like they can't play (still holding out a bit of hope for Steward, and I agree Hunt is probably the second best back right now) you may have to consider playing him.

Now I don't actually see Pinkel doing this. It's a healthy Hansbrough or nothing I'm afraid. I would think long and hard about it though if no one steps up this week.

We've debated the Lock redshirt, but if any redshirt is likely meaningless, it's Doherty's. Unless he just falls apart and doesn't develop, he likely leaves after 3 years for MLB. So why not activate and play him given the lack of production?

I dunno. Just another thought I had and decided to regurgitate.

What about next year?

As much as we'd like to see Hansbrough carry us to another division title, we still need to develop the next RBs for next year, or we'll be hoping Strong carries us like we banked on Abbington to be ready.

I'd burn the redshirt and get Doherty in there.

Stop counting on Abbington. He wasn't ready coming out of HS. He wasn't ready this summer. He wasn't ready coming into camp. His time was right now, and he's not ready.

Hopefully Strong will actually put the work in to be a good player. So disappointed by Abbington. It looks like he didn't even know where the weight room was at Hutch.

would NOT count on Walters changing anything at all. He couldn't beat out Witter last year, and he certainly is not as fast as Witter if that means anything.

Witter also seems to be able to take on the big guys on the inside pass block, if Steward, Abbington (or Doherty) can't be much help I'm afraid we'll have to hope Strong gets here early as planned and can perform as advertised.

This year it looks like we're one and done at RB.
