The question is, how do we get around all of that on a more consistent basis?
First, we’ll need wins. Success. That will have to be based on better coaching/development than our opponents because we don’t have better baseline talent. 8 wins per year on a consistent basis for the next few years. Beat a real team and look like a real SEC program on a CBS Saturday.
Second, we’re going to have to be the “by Mennen” of Missouri high schools. We’re not going to win consistently against Ohio State or USC, but we should get some. And that will he enabled by having a consistent presence in the KC and STL high schools that is more than just a face that shows up on the off year there’s a 4* on the field. I’m not saying that’s what they’re doing now. I honestly don’t know. But I can’t imagine we have grade A relationships with the HS scene in STL given our results there. It does appear to be better in KC.
Three, we have to sell what we’ve got. We do have 1) SEC schedule. 2) A reasonable rate of putting players in the NFL. I would say fantastic but we’re competing with blue bloods here, so reasonable. 3) Expanding facilities. 4) You can come back and be a hero to everyone in the state. No one will recognize Durron Neal in Schnucks in 5 years. TJ Moe is a different story. 5) SEC money to burn. 6) Every game on the TV. 7) Mama can drive to the games. 8) M-I-Z
There’s more that I would pitch if I had more inside info and each kid would be different. But I think there’s plenty to sell. And I’m sure our coaches aren’t really bad at it. We just had another perfect storm of shite to wade through to get to where we are today.
We’ll do it again next year.

The more I think on it, perhaps moving Franklin to recruiting coordinator to allow him to learn the business and moving Ofodile to a coaching assistant position would be a better answer. I have heard multiple people say that AJ would be an outstanding addition as a recruiter.
I had thought that recruiting coordinators were not allowed to visit prospects as they aren't full time coaches. I have seen AO on in home visits, but it's always been at a time when we were down a coach so maybe there is some provision for that.
That being said, it shouldn't be surprising if he is elevated to fill the 10th assistant with Franklin or Carta Samuels filling his previous role.

If you want to look at the bright side. Every in state recruit that Mizzou pushed hard for signed with an elite school.
OSU (2), USC, Texas and Oklahoma.
Goodrich is going LSU it Georgia.
Thompson is still a possibility, but he has an Alabama visit coming up.

I’m not sure how that’s a bright side. It feels better than losing them to Kentucky or Iowa. But the net result is that we aren’t better either way.

I get it, and like I said. I'm sure we are hitting those exact areas consistently.
You are right though, our best hope at at least some incremental is winning more games. I'm sure the 1-5 start buried us in at least a few of these guys eyes and by the time we started looking like a real football team they had already moved on. You know I've beat the identification and development drum consistently and still believe this has to be our path.
Ford has not produced very well, especially recently. Perhaps replacing him with a STL guy that went to Mizzou and had success does have merit, but Mizzou has long had issues with getting foortball players out of STL and that predates even Ford who has been recruiting there for a long time. I'm not sure how much difference it would make if any (hell, could get worse with all the relationships he has in the area HS) but I'm open to considering that.
Hill seemingly does a better job, but KC has also been historically better to Mizzou. It's a shame that it doesn't produce talent on the same level as STL.
It's just one hell of a tough row to hoe when you are trying to compete against schools like those. We essentially have no advantages besides being closer.
Following the 2013 season where we finished in the top 5, we still only went 2 for 7 on our STL targets and didn't fare a whole lot better in KC.

If I was a recruiting coordinator I would use the biggest resource available that other SEC schools and most blue bloods would envy.... Our J School...
The biggest term used by athletes now a days is branding... When you turn on ESPN and Tom Luginbill is mentioning recruiting, he identifies future Bama, UGA, OSU, and Texas players by name. They are becoming a household commodity from Boise, ID to Eufala, AL before they even step foot on campus. With so many meetings centering on stories of the day, prospects to keep an eye on, and think pieces from the SEC, we have to start identifying ways to be a part of that conversation.
