But Pinkel didn't have the transfer portal hanging over his head. Horn is the starter next year or he is gone. So there is no advantage to sacrificing him this year.

The portal argument means you would want to give him PT. I hardly think Chase Daniel, Blaine Gavvert or James Franklin had "wasted years" by getting meaningful snapes.

This was a classic Pinkel transitioning to the next qb move. He did not care about the redshirt, he was more about the process of developing the qb.

If Horn gets off to a good start, then yes, it was great to give him reps. If he gets off to a poor start, or if the OL does badly, or he finds the offense limiting, he hits the portal.

With Pinkel, kid does poorly for a few snaps, no big deal, he's for sure back next year. That's not true anymore. The better QBs will move on if things aren't perfect. I.E. Bazelak couldn't handle fan criticism, the kid he replaced who went to Washington wanted better offensive weapons. The threat of the portal will change alot of the old ways.

Is Drinkwitz really going to be turning the offense over to a newly hired OC? That right there is why it is a good idea to wait and get the offense set for next year. Horn can still get some reps when the team plays New Mexico State. I believe a new OC will fix several issues one with the OL and the other with scheming. Getting the defense set is good and focus on the offense and recruiting/transfer portal.
