There is a really good quote in that article by a HS coach, says ppl are just a little tepid about Mizzou right now (and I totally agree with this). He said if we get wins this year things will get back on track with instate recruiting.
These kids don't want to commit to a sinking ship. Come out 5-0, play well, sneak a win in that tough stretch, end with 7-8 wins maybe a 9th in a bowl and we'll get some of these guys.

Monte Harrison commits to Nebraska.
I am extremely fed up with this.

damn. Big 10 baseball must have really convinced him
Seriously though, this was surprising. Coming from Lee's Summit, where we have had a lot of people going to Mizzou recently from Dixon to Boehm to Baggett, I didn't expect this.

If it were someone else, no, but I kinda thought he would end up at Mizzou.

I am fully convinced that we will get No prospects 4-Stars and up if this staff is allowed to finish the class.

Pisses me off that we lose yet another instate recruit. I have to believe the kid plans on going pro in baseball or quitting baseball.

Freedom made it official apparently too. 247 shows him as a Nebraska commit now as well.

So going down the list of top 10 Missouri players we have:
1. Ole Miss
2. MU not in top 3.
3. MU not in top 3.
4. Arkansas
5. No apparent MU interest.
6. Nebraska
7. Will end up at Arkansas.
8. K State
9. Nebraska
10. Decommitted from MU(but hopefully get back).
By comparison, in Arkansas:
1. Predicted to go to Arkansas(though I bet he goes elsewhere)
2. Arkansas
3. Predicted to go to Arkansas.
4. Predicted to go to Arkansas.
5. Arkansas
6. Arkansas
7. Tulsa
8. Arkansas State
9. Arkansas apparently in top 4.

What does the state of Missouri share in common with the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New York and Wyoming? They are the only states that have had ZERO kids in the top 10 commit to a school within that state. Does Delaware even have a D1 football school? Wyoming only had a top 1 and that kid went to Florida. I would bet a list of 10 kids would show at least 1 going to Wyoming.
I'm sorry, but that just doesn't happen, even after a 5-7 season unless you just quit hitting it hard. Shite, kU sucks arse and they have 2 of their top 10 so the poor record only flies to a certain extent. ZERO out of the top 10 is almost impossible.

Guys, I'm telling you - his contract situation is killing us in recruiting. His current contract only runs through 2017. You can't recruit well when kids don't have any confidence that you'll be the coach when they step on campus, let alone when they graduate. That's why coaches contracts usually have a 5 year window. Alden didn't extend his contract, and that's a huge "no confidence" vote. That, plus last season - and you know why we're losing our best in-state guys. We're going to have a class of the guys who are life-long Mizzou guys, or kids who want to play in the SEC and this is their best option to do so.
Combine the contract and last season, with the stories we're hearing about kids not hearing enough from us? There's your problem. This class is what it is - IF we get 8 wins, and a contract extension for Pinkel in early December, maybe we can flip a couple. Otherwise, just look ahead to the 2015 class.

Personally I think I would want more than that to give him an extension. Unless those 8 include a victory over a USC or Georgia or Florida that just wouldnt do it for me. I think we can do better. JMO

If you had asked me 2 years ago where the program stood, I would have said 4 OOC wins and wins without a thought over Vandy, UT, UK, OM and potential wins because they're at home against UF, USC and A&M. The only game I would have considered a significant upset is going to Georgia. Amazing how things change so fast.

This basically all started with Pinkels personal stuff.. in hindsight, should have just gassed him then.

I hear you. But "contract extension" isn't "contract guarantee." Most football coaches have a 5-year window on their contracts for this exact reason - recruiting. If they fail to meet expectations, the University can end their contract. Recruits want confidence that the coach that recruits them will be there through their career - even if it's only on the surface - perception is their reality. But right now, Pinkel is trying to recruit at an incredible disadvantage, and all the personal stuff is being used against him big time, don't doubt that. The double-whammy of the personal stuff and the contract is killing us. IMO, of course.

Lets say that Pinkel lays an egg this year and Alden has him walk the plank......do you think Alden will go after a guy with a lot of hype or pull another rabbit out of his hat like Haith?
Posted on 7/6/13 at 1:03 pm to ZouDerrty
I think the book is still out on Haith currently. I like what he has done so far(other than preparing the team for the tourney) but now they are all his kids. It will be interesting to see what Haith does in the next couple of years.
As for the football, I have no idea. What the Haith hire showed me is that Alden isn't afraid to go with an unpopular choice if he thinks that is the best option. I remember the uproar when Haith was announced.

Alden likes the under-the-radar candidates, and that's definitely been his MO In the past. BUT...we're in the SEC, and it's a different ballgame now. It's not just about making a good hire, I think if you want respect you have to go after someone with a little panache and make a bit of a splash.
Mizzou has a lot of offer to the right candidate. It's a solid program, facilities are being improved, they'd have lots of support from administration, fans are patient, academics are good and the program is clean. Plus, Pinkel is already the 7th highest paid coach in the SEC, money should not be an issue.
We HAVE to have an outstanding recruiter. That's the "panache" or "hype" part of the equation. We have to have someone that can lock our borders. And, they also have to have a process-focused, results-oriented approach to the game And, I'd prefer to see someone who reinforces the values of the current staff - family-oriented, avoids the thugs, etc. I'd love to see us go for a top level assistant like Kentucky did, or a proven head coach at a smaller school.

I don't know if I want to go so far as to say we want thugs, but I found this a bit funny. Guess which group of first names for OLine recruits are Mizzou recruits and which group are Georgia recruits. HINT: Mizzou's sounds like they could be in Saved By The Bell.
