We certainly need to continue to recruit better -- but any alleged "gap" is being largely overstated IMO.
Honest hypothetical question(I don't know the right answer): At what point do we just embrace "what we are" under this staff -- meaning our end result is going to be "stars" that weren't highly recruited coming out of highschool and didn't win us any press conferences on signing day -- or if we do get highly-recruited guys, they are going to be from MS?
I'm not saying I'm there. I'm not. And I'm still on the fence about Mullen in general. But if he manages to win 9-10 games next year carried largely by "weak" 2010 and 2011 classes that everyone melted down about at the time, do we start to get to that point?

That doesn't change the fact that the weaknesses of this class are gonna be a problem for us down the road. We can't just write off a whole class with the way the SEC West is playing now.
Maybe this class will prove me wrong, but I won't hold my breath.
What specific weakness are you referring to with this class?

I'd be ecstatic for this to be the case, but as it stands currently Mullen's diamonds haven't proven anything yet. Judging those classes today shows they were still below average by SEC West standards.

When Dan goes after stars they all seem to implode. Always the brides maid, never the bride.

Fact is that we are not beating ranked teams. We are not moving forward.
Next year will be either a huge year for MSU or he will need to go.
1- Schedule set in his favor
2- Returns great players and most of last year's team.
3- Has people coming in to help with depth.
4- Has a great class in the works that can be built on with success on the field. It could be a top 10 class.
5- If we have succuess on the field and recruiting, then I can see the next season being better.
IF that does not happen, he needs to go.

OL is the most glaring weakness. The majority of the OL in this class seems like they were our plan C's and D's.
Overall talent level is low with this class too, though. Going based on class points on 247, the closest West class is Arkansas and they are still a full point ahead of ours. The quality of the other classes in the West blows ours out of the water.

Really? now we are saying he isn't that good? Come on. He's a great player. There is no questioning that. He would not be competing for 2 deep. He would push for a starting role.
Not saying he isn't a great player. I don't see him coming in and immediately taking a spot from Redmond, Calhoun, or Love though.

Anything less than 9 wins next season is unacceptable and should result in Mullen's immediate dismissal.

FWIW (sorry if Germans) but Jordan Harris did sign.

I'll give you that the OL position leaves something to be desired. But it's not like we are relying on any of these guys outside of Johnson for a couple of years(and we may not rely on him either depending) -- so we've got plenty of time to play the development game. Our 5 best returning OL were all barely recruited 2*s/low 3*s -- and we should have one of the better OLs in the league again next year with 3-4 guys who should get at least a cup of coffee at the next level. So, I ask again, at what point do we quit complaining about "stars" at this position -- and accept that we're a developmental program that builds stars rather than recruiting them?
I think we have a number of prospects that are horribly underrated by the sites in this class. Jamoral Graham is the only prospect that I think has a real likelihood of being overrated. I wouldn't be at all surprised to look up in 4 years to see this class in the same light I now see the 2011 class -- which is as a pretty good and balanced group that the recruiting sites whiffed their arse off on...
Is it "good enough"? I don't think there is ever going to be any such thing at MSU. Ultimately, it's a tweener class when we had little room, while on probation, and no momentum for the vast majority of the cycle -- and in that light, I think it's good enough to get by.
I, like everyone else, expect more in 2015 -- and I think we're going to get it.

Calhoun no, Redmond or Love probably.

NO. For the majority of the year he was better than Calhoun. Calhoun just started playing lights out toward the end.

Calhoun
Absolutely NOT.

Redmond
What in the slot, as the nickel back? Doubtful.

Love was our best guy until the last few games no doubt, and Redmond is a bit better than Jiles(or Cox at CB for that matter), but you're really underestimating this kid. And if you'd read I said he wouldn't beat Calhoun.

I hope the secondary made some quantum leaps at the end of the year because Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry feasted on them in S'Ville and aTm had no trouble throwing on them. They did look better down the stretch though.

What you had is young DBs, A first year D Coord, and D Townsend ALL encountering a steep learning curve thruought the season. Even though Whitley had lost his step due to injury, he played a nice role in hardening these guys as well. I still hate we missed more depth though.

I sure hope they have turned the corner and next year will be the litmus test. As a life long state fan, I would advise to temper expectations and find a few other hobbies besides college football. College baseball maybe?

They made some pretty good ones. They should be very solid this year. Cox will be a great safety. With a year of starts, the corners should be good too. The defense is gonna be salty AF.
eta: what's up with Jay Hughes now?

I haven't heard anything on Jay Hughes after he went down against Okie State. If I remember correctly, he was having a great game. Hope he gets back.
