Transcript of Stoops Post-Game Presser (via Kyle Tucker at the C-J)

First off for the bad news, Nate Willis was on crutches, Rumph is in a sling for his shoulder, and Kory Brown is in a boot. All on the side of the ball we absolutely did NOT need injuries.

Some notable comments from Stoops:

quote:

ON QUARTERBACKS: “Obviously we need to continue to look at that. I thought Jalen did some good things. Obviously I got to look at the film and see if it was him or if it was the players around him that hurt us at times. I thought Jalen did some good things. Obviously Max came in and looked very good and moved the ball for us. So we’ve got to go back and take a good, hard look at that again.”

quote:

ON GOING FOR THE FIELD GOAL IN THE FOURTH AND IF HE THOUGHT ABOUT GOING FOR IT: “I thought about it. It was fourth and three I believe, and (I) thought long and hard – well, not for a long time – but thought quickly about going for it. But we needed points. Actually, if we don’t miss the extra point, we have a shot with that plan. We had, what, a minute and 30 (seconds) with three timeouts and a shot at an onside kick. So that was the plan. I figured if you don’t get it there, the game’s over. Had to get it to three. That was the plan. We go down and score. We kick the extra point, we got a shot.”

Quotes from Neal Brown:

quote:

ON MAX SMITH MAKING IT A COMPETITION AT QB AGAIN: “It’s been a competition the whole time. Going into the game, we had a plan to just kind of see how it goes. I thought he did a good job of being mature and handling it. I thought when he came in the game, he made some throws, made some big throws down field. And I thought he played well. It’s hard to say until I get a chance to watch it.”

quote:

ON WHETHER HE SHOULD’VE GONE TO SMITH SOONER: “I don’t know. Ifs, ands, buts, you know what I mean? Jalen beat him there in camp. He played better in camp. We moved the ball. It wasn’t like Jalen was just coming up empty. Third quarter, the third-and-1 that we did not get, where (WKU) No. 4 made a good play, I thought that was a big momentum swing. I’m not trying to avoid your question; I just don’t know.”

And DJ Eliot:

quote:

ON RUMPH, WILLIS, OTHER INJURIES: “I haven’t heard that anybody’s got anything serious.”

quote:

ON WHAT WENT WRONG: “Hats off to them (WKU). They did a good job and they executed well. They played at their top level, but a lot of it is stuff that we could have executed.”

Good stuff Belle.

The UK situation reminds me of Dinardo at LSU.

Stoops needs to change the culture and recruit. People dog Dinardo, but he changed the culture.

I hope y'all get it going.

It's just going to be a rough year. Most of us expected that but I don't know that others who got caught up in the hype did (don't read our Rivals board). Barker tweeted last night that the recruits knew what they were getting into so not to worry. I think that's legit and while we might lose one or two it'll stay intact for the most part.

I think the only thing I had an issue last night that was within this staff's control was some of the play calling. If Whitlow wasn't able to open it up then they should've allowed Smith to do it. But that's easy to say in hindsight when from all accounts Whitlow had outperformed him all summer.

I liked that UK got scoring points from the defense and is a good sign of where Stoops is taking this team.

3 points from fumble recovery
7 points from fumble recovery

If Stoops can get points from the defense I am happy with the hire.

I'm still ecstatic with the hire either way. We're not going to see much progress this early.

As you said, turning them over was encouraging. It's something we haven't done in awhile. The defense will get better but it won't much this season because of lack of depth.

I will say I was disappointed in Rumph and Cobble though. With their size they should be pushing some guys around but IMO it's an indication of how hard bad techniques and habits are to break.

300+ pounds is a lot of mass to move did they look fit last night or just big? Did Stoops get them better conditioned in the off season?

Big. I don't think it's as much an issue of conditioning as it is poor technique/bad habits though. I didn't see anybody sucking air or anything like that. And in Rumph's defense, he did end up in a sling last night so he may have been having shoulder issues again.

Also some positives that will probably get overlooked:

- WKU only converted on 2 of it's 10 third downs. Something we've really struggled with in the past. Last season's matchup allowed them to convert 7 of 16 third downs. Gotta work on 1st and 2nd, but it's a start.

- Cats rushed for 216 yards and 2 TDs. Had 419 yards in total offense. Last season against WKU? 41 net yards rushing with 373 total offensive yards.

Yeah, it's going to be a long season.
Lots of teaching to do.
Team should get better has season moves forward as long as injuries don't weigh on us.

As for WKU game.

That first half Pass Interference call was huge allowing them to stay on the field and score a TD and they go into halftime ahead. We had tons of fans there and the place would have been rocking for us if we just could have gotten the lead at some point.

The false starts ended up being very costly. Seemed like we were in first and 15 for over half the game. We don't have enough talent to win games doing those simple mistakes.

We brought in Max Smith far too late. I'm for if you make that move you have to do it earlier in the game or don't do it at all. I'm not big on playing two QB's, but if you do commit to playing two then you have to give the other a shot at some point in the first half.

Like what we saw for the first game though. Fans were happy and into the game for as much as they could be trailing the entire way. We all know its a rebuilding process we are in and it will take a season or two just to get stable and set the foundation.

Future will be much brighter for us.

While disappointed in the outcome, there are positives to take away from this. Remembering WKU was a bowl team last year, and went 2-10 with a staff who wasn't even trying to recruit it appears, I did see some good things and think that brighter days are ahead for UK football.
