I have a legitimate question to ask Florida fans. The Rant is so full of Kiffin right now it would get pushed straight to the bottom, so I think it better to go straight to Gator fans.
For the record, I've always liked Florida pretty well so rest assured there will be no trolling or smack talk.

Standard quiz for non-Gator fans:
1)How many jorts do you own?
2)Powerade or Gatorade?
ETA: BTW, what's your question?

I've never liked carbonated drinks, so as a kid the only thing I would drink was Gatorade. I've heard about the jort stereotype from Seminole fans I know (out in force now, unfortunately). I don't own any jorts. More of a straight-up Daisy Dukes man.
I realize the join date may be a red flag. I was previously a member of a different Bama forum, but I didn't really care for it, so I came over here. But I have been posting on the Rant and on the Alabama board a good deal since joining.
If you're more comfortable just answering my question here, that's fine too. While playing EA Sports' NCAA Football last night I noticed that Florida is listed as one of Alabama's rivals, along with Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, and Miss State. I've also seen the UF logo included on some of the Alabama "I hate orange" shirts, alongside Auburn and Tennessee. Wikipedia lists Florida as rivals with Alabama on Florida's page, but not on Alabama's. It's also worth noting that there is no entry entitled "Alabama-Florida football Rivalry," as there is for most rivalries.
I have been an Alabama fan since 2002, when family members began attending the university. But before that, as a little boy, I actually claimed Florida as my favorite team, because I was growing up in Tennessee, my dad hated UT, and the Gators had a penchant for beating the Vols throughout the 90s. I've seen every Bama game since the start of the 2002 season, including 6 games with Florida ('05,'06,'08,'09,'10, and '11). All of these games have been exciting and most have been competitive. I know that Bama and UF have met in the majority of SECCGs and that UF cost Bama a shot at the NC in '94 (year I was born) and '08, and Bama returned the favor in '09. I've always liked and respected Florida, I root for them generally when they aren't playing Alabama, and I've gotten along very well with all of their fans that I've come into contact with. By contrast, every Criminoles fan I've ever met has hated Bama, for reasons I still don't entirely understand.
I had a good friend who was a long-time Bama fan (dating back to the Pre-Bryant era), who told me that UF and Alabama had always gotten along well due to shared rivalries with UT, LSU, and (until the SEC split into divisions) Auburn. I once had a Vol fan friend of mine tell me that Bama and UF had an "Axis of Evil."
My question is: Do Florida fans consider Alabama a rival? If so, would you consider this a hate-based rivalry or one where both teams respect one another and are rivals solely because they've had memorable, important games and generally compete at a high level?

I'm a young fan and from the South Florida, so I wouldn't know if there was some resentment from older fans. I would say Alabama is a rival in the sense that they're a successful program and we would need to beat them in order to be successful. The few Bama-Florida games I've watched were entertaining.
I don't hate Bama or their fans at all. As a Dolphin fan I don't like Saban but as a college coach, nah. The panhandle FL fans may have a different opinion.
BRB going to watch 1st play of 2011 game.

As an older Gator I can shed some light on UF vs Bama football "rivalry".
First...you have to remember there were 12 teams in the SEC back in the 1950-mid 60s until Ga Tech and Tulane both dropped out...feeling they were more academically elite etc etc.
Bama used to have a red hot rivalry with Ga Tech and there was no love lost. Back in those days the SEC did not mandate schools play a certain number of games or dictate who they played...it was really wide open. UF and Bama did not play each other much...UF also didn't play Ole Miss or Vandy or UT much back in those days.
UF played mostly LSU, Miss State, UK, Ga Tech to go along with UGA, AU. Six games is all we scheduled. Bama scheduled seven a few times trying to get an edge in number of wins. Every school was fairly independent and handled their own schedules with little interference.
One series with Bama was played in Tuscaloosa two years in a row 1963-64 with no return visit by Bama! Spurrier was soph for the 1964 game when Bama wanted revenge for the previous years upset and yet we almost beat them, losing 14-17...if played in Gaineville?
We picked up the seventh game in SEC play later on in the late 1980s I believe...and then a real round robin schedule started...but you could go through a whole recruiting class without those players ever facing a Bama or Ole Miss etc etc.if we had just played them when they signed.
After Ga Tech & Tulane both dropped out...the SEC had only ten teams until 1992 and that's when we started playing Vandy and UT more often. Bama and Ole Miss would be rotated (Bama played us 1978-79 and Ole Miss played us 1980-81 I think...along with 1988-89)
For Bama history
Bama's Bear Bryant and UGAs Wally Butts faced a real nightmare PR scandal when the Saturday Evening Post...a respected magazine, publish a story regarding fixing a game between the two schools....Bryant and Butts were alledged to have had their phone call intercepted by an Atlanta businessman who listen in to their conversation regarding Butts telling Bryant what plays they would run and so forth...the outcome was never in doubt...it was in 1963 or 64 and UGA was not very good...but the object was to fix the score. If a story broke like that now...with all the social media...it would have been mayhem. It got a lot of publicity..but Butts/Bear sued the Post for slander and won a huge judgment. Remember back in those days it was easy to eavesdrop on phone calls because of the primitive phone systems. Bear shook off that scandal and a few others that were minor and kept winning.
