2019 Defense Will Be Lethal

Cant wait for season start. I see a defense improved from a year ago.
We have many pass rushers that may etch their name in Gator lore imo. Chatfield, Moon, Z. Carter, Zuniga, to name the guys with snap counts.
DL will be solid imo with Slaton, Campbell, Conliffe, Shuler, Dunlap will hold down the fort against the run and they have now 1 full year under Grantham. The transfer from Louisville is icing.
LB will be also solid with Reese now in fourth year and having complete knowledge of the game. Brunson, Houston, Miller, Jackson. D. Reese (OLB) will all have snap counts to give us depth and range.
DB is an embarrassment of riches, Henderson, Wilson, Davis, Taylor, Dean, Edwards, Stewart, Burney are all able to make QBs nervous throwing.
Special Teams we have McPherson & Townsend back rock solid.

I would like to be optimistic about the defense as well but I think losing the studs we had in the d-line will hurt. I predict this will be the first year in a while were the offense is the strength of the team

Chauncey this past year was much better than I think any of us anticipated. He definitely will be missed. I’m excited about the potential we have with the youngins, but experience always helps.

What damn studs are you referring to?? Jefferson? P/T player, Polite? He will be replaced trust me, Clark ? He was in second rotation behind Slaton, Shuler, Campbell. I am scratching my head about who the hell we lost on the DL?

Losing Polite, Joseph and Jefferson is a pretty big deal, man. Look at the difference between the defense from Kentucky onward when Jefferson was actually on the field.
They'll get replaced, but it'll be a rough few games to start the year.

Everyone cast stones at Vosean Joseph, and I didn't because was a difference maker, but that's LB, not DL...our DL will be stout. Jefferson never played nose tackle, he was always used to help sweep plays and protect the edge more.
The proof is always in the pudding but count me in as someone who thinks defense in 2019 will surprise folks.
We got beat by UK because we were over confident and thought we could just waltz out of the home locker room and win. My prediction in StarkLexas in 2019 will be a horse of a different color.

I think our defense will be good, but we're still a little ways away from being lethal.
Also: LBs in this system, even interior, might as well be linemen. They blitz a lot more than in other systems.
That being said: I expect to see the results when we start to wash out McElwain's players.

I think we’ll miss Polite as a pure pass rusher, but he was not very good in the run game and I think Greenard will be a big improvement in the run game.
Amari Burney will be a big upgrade for Vosean Joseph. He’ll be able to cover tight ends better than Vosean did AND he’s proven to be effective in Grantham’s blitz packages from the Michigan game. And he’s every bit as big and physical as Vosean was. I think Burney is an upgrade there.
Secondary will obviously be deeper and improved. Trey Dean will play Chauncey’s position and probably have better natural corner abilities than Chauncey did.
The only liability that I see is the older David Reese. He’s elite in the run defense and a huge leader for us this year, but him in pass coverage is my only worry. I think our defense will be really, really good too, Reel.

We haven't had elite safety play in a long time, too, but our LB corps is going to be really strong.
I think my main worry is about the safeties and the DL simply because they're unproven.
Our corner play got upgraded from about a B+ (without backups playing) to an A++.
Wilson, Henderson, Dean with backups like Steele, Elam and Kimbrough? This is definitely our deepest and most talented CB group in a long time. Hungry, physical, fast. It gets me hyped up just thinking about it.

I think Brad Stewart is elite. He was a mid season all American prior to his injury and think about the big plays he had against LSU and Tennessee. I worry about the other safety spot somewhat, but I think Stiner/Davis/Huggins or whoever else because I know I’m missing a guy, one of those guys will be able to fill the void.
As for the defensive line, there’s a ton of experience in the middle. Campbell, Shuler, Conliffe, and Slaton have all played a ton of ball for us. Zuniga, obviously, has the most experience on the DL. But even guys like Zach Carter benefitted from the redshirt duke last year. He flashed a good bit in his four games. Then Greenard has a year of high level football played at Louisville in this defensive system, so he’s new to us but not inexperienced. I’ll grant that Chatfield/Langham/baby david reese/the incoming freshmen don’t have the experience, but I think our defensive line is deep and will match up better to stop a team like UGA’s run game this year.
My concern would be with pass rush, BUT our system is designed so that you don’t have to depend on a single dominant pass rusher (although he typically does have a 10+ sack guy every year) because Grantham is so creative with who and where he blitzes. I think Polite and Joseph’s void will be filled by all of these talented guys that have another year in the system. I’m high on the defense this year.
