I think academics. When he first thought he was going pro, I heard that he missed some classes in the early part of this semester. However, he changed his mind and decided to come back for his SR year. So I think the punishment is as a result of the missed classes. From what I heard from my friends who still work for USC, there are still athletic dept monitors who make sure the players show up to classes.

I remember when that process started with Spurrier's hiring. If I would have football players in my labs (I was a Lab Instructor years ago at SC,) there would be a rep from the Ath Dept outside my door and he/she would make sure the player arrived to the scheduled lab on time.
