I didn't read the article, so I may have misunderstand your point. However this thread tells me that the student section is consistently bad. Rest of the stadium was full and loud. Student section was in 5 points.

You obviously didn't attend this game. People started filtering out in the first quarter of a tight game and continued to leave until the student section half empty when the clock hit 00:00.
That is pathetic because it was a close game throughout and the weather was overcast so it wasn't too hot, too cold or even raining.

How many students are aware of this? I didn't know until I was a senior and the fee is only 90 bucks I believe.
I guarantee if students had to pay face value for the tickets they get they wouldn't be a mass exodus at halftime for these games

quote:I got an upperdeck ticket for that game and was right above the band so I couldn't see the full student section wrapping around but I thought it was pretty full. All I know for sure is that Tennessee fans were the worst and complained that we were standing up throughout the game. One dude behind us ran down a few rows and laid down on an empty section of the bleacher to look up girls' dresses and then called security because we were standing up. He claimed that he could only see the game if he was laying down because he didn't want to stand to see over us. Then other Tenn fans were wondering why students were sitting up top and requested to see our tickets. I have never thought sitting students up top near the visiting teams fans was a good idea.

Yes you would. There are around 12,000 tickets for 30,000 students and USC's tuition is one of the lowest ones in the SEC.

Who gives a shite what it is compared to the rest of the SEC? Its still around $10,000. Everyone else at the games have real jobs and are making money, not paying thousands of dollars to go to school. Students have the right to leave early if they want, they are the ones going to the school right now. Now, if the school wants to implement some policies to encourage students to stay longer, then fine by me. But using money is a horrible idea. Have a check-out system for students who leave early and make it difficult for them to get a ticket for the next game, give students a discount to away game/bowl game tickets to students who stay the whole time, give discounts at ru-ho, or traveling bball tickets. The only policy in place now is if you get a ticket and don't go to the game, it is very unlikely you won't be going to the next one. Also, tickets can be cancelled all the way up until halftime, which doesn't give the opportunity for other students to use them.

I realize that there were some exaggerations in this, but it's an opinion piece, not actual reporting that we also do.
I thought the parts about the students never staying until the fourth were hilarious and hopefully will piss enough students off to actually decide to stay.
I've defended the students for a long time, but as Saturday was the first time being at a game where I wasn't in the student section, it really pissed me off seeing them leave.

Bottom line is the fact that the student section is not living up to past standards when it comes to students ... dating back to at least the sixties that I am aware of.
That's just a fact. Used to be the student section was the last section to leave the stadium. Now they are the first.

I remember not even long ago I was praising the students and getting pissed off at the West stands because they would leave early. 2005-2007 years IIRC

2003-2006 were my student section days, and I feel like we rarely left early unless we were getting slaughtered. I know in 2005, we were destroying Kentucky and everyone stayed until the very end. We also had to stand in line forever to get a ticket, so it meant a little more I guess. I don't know what needs to be done to fix the issue but hopefully our students will think about how it looked and stick around next time. Our home schedule is a little "weak" this year except for UF and Clemson, so this could be a trend until those games.

That's what I remember. It was first come first served picking up the tickets at the Russell House. We would assign who was going to go get them, give them all our ID's and they would stand in line early to make sure we got them.

I think another thing we can all take away from this is at least Spurrier is pretty classy about it all. Spurrier>Bo Pelini (but we knew that already)
Deadspin article about how Pelini reacted a couple years ago to fans leaving early
Also, I meant to post this earlier but I have to come clean. I must admit that I left the game early...with 2:30 left in the 4th quarter.
ETA: I found me in the pic A$AP Cocky posted. Directly under the 'G' of Gamecocksonline on the turnramp in white shorts.

All of that is just the prelude to Pelini's message for the Huskers' fans: "It took everything in my power to not say, 'frick you, fans. frick all of you.' frick 'em." After Sharpe says a lot of students had left at halftime, the woman starts to say that people did return to their seats. Pelini interjects: "Our crowd. What a bunch of fricking fair-weather fricking—they can all kiss my arse out the fricking door. 'Cause the day is fricking coming now. We'll see what they can do when I'm fricking gone. I'm so fricking pissed off."

That's right. I even remember people camping out for them for the 2004 UGA game. We had high hopes for that one, and a massive line started forming the night before tickets were to be given out. To me, it sort of breeds unity within the student body. Everyone had a story about how long they had to wait to get their tickets.

Day-um! Bo Pellini sho nuff crazier than a shithouse rat! lol
He's done. He'll be out there competing with that other POS Kiffin, for a new job come January.

I wish they would go back to the line system. People actually had to sacrifice their time and energy to get a ticket so it meant more when they got one.
Now all students have to do is click accept on the computer and they've got their ticket which devalues it I think.

Could not agree more. It used to be an event just getting the tickets. Used to take an effort and only the ardent would participate and be appreciative of the chance.
Talk about lines ... y'all should have seen some of the lines we used to have for Gamecock basketball back when McGuire arrived and on through the late 70s. They were epic parties.

I think we need to think about getting the students more involved. One of the great things about baseball is the PA guys and use of music to keep the fans entertained between innings. Soccer fans stay standing and cheering for 90 minutes with chants and sing-a-longs to bring them into the game. If all we're doing is yelling first down, cursing on kickoffs, randomly chanting Game or Cocks and jumping around to techno music... it gets boring by halftime.
Fans stay in Fenway for Sweet Caroline during the seventh inning stretch. Given the name of the song, 80,000 people singing it during the third quarter break or after the game would be an easy fix. Make them part of the game and they will be less eager to streak for the exits.... IMHO.

At least it's something new. And for a while it worked to keep the students hyped and into the game. But playing it ad nauseum has tempered it's usefulness.
If there was a set times that it was played (going into third downs on defense for instance, to get the crowd going), and only those times, instead of every time the PA guy can get his grubby little finger on the button, it would have more meaning. There just doesn't seem to be any direction to our fanhood.
It would also be great if the students themselves where the ones taking the lead on this. As silly as their cheerleaders are, A&Ms midnight practice is genius in the sense of power it gives the fans. They are going to cheer harder for cheers they came up with on their own than some canned idea from a marketing department crammed down their throat.

You mean like start of game, after every score (Unless it's a blowout), and before the second half starts?
(With that said, I agree. I'd be down for 3-4 times a game.)

Agreed. plus that stupid frickin' overly loud "stand up and cheer" video they do when everyone is finally sitting during time outs trying to regroup ... just bad timing, bad video board management.
Nothing flows well at the moment. They need to limit Sandstorm to the opening kickoff and get rid of the stand up and cheer video altogether.
