Butch Jones looks good on paper and he may pan out. But all he's ever done is walk around behind Brian Kelly with his hand out waiting. He has no Southern recruiting ties. A state with no in state talent and an impatient/irrational fan base on his back. If Charlie didn't want it neither should you Butch. But you'll get a decent payday and its not like you can't go back to a Cincy caliber program in 3 years.

Definitely not a hire that makes one go, "Oh my God! They hired Butch Jones! What, oh what are we ever going to do"

Would have thought UT would make a way bigger splash than this. Their program is a shell of its former self.

this year they were just being used as leverage for pay raises (much like our basketball program was before we hired Horn)

I think it will work out decently for them. Not immediately of course, but after a year or two when Tennessee wins some games they aren't supposed to.

All it takes is a little bit of hype and then UT will start recruiting itself again. Unfortunately.

I would be shocked if Jones is still coaching at UTe by the time Spurrier retires. I think the O/U for Jones' tenure there should be 3 seasons.

Yeah I was surprised at this hire as well ... several of my UT friends are not too happy about this hire. They feel like they may be in for another Dooley.

Nothing they could do though, the money is gone. I read an article somewhere with the average reserves for an SEC football program. And I don't remember specifics but even Vandy had 10 mill. But Ut had like 3mill. Its not like you can offer a coach stock options on the back end. And only 5% believe in themselves enough to take a deal like that anyway. Sorry even in 5 years, they is fawked.

The key to Jones' failure will be our success. Keep beating Tennessee and he'll be gone too, in short order.

Let's look at it this way. He has to beat, every year, Bama and Saban, Richt and Georgia, South Carolina and Spurrier and whatshisname down at Florida.

That's a damn tough row to hoe right there. And Tennessee fans will not be happy with 7-5 or 8-4 seasons, not ever.

So Jones is behind the eight ball right out of the chute. It's going to be very very tough for him to bring them back anytime soon.

Conversely, there is another angle to all of this and that is that UT fans are making a big deal out of so many of their current players having been recruited by Jones at Cincy - and how so many of their current players listed Cincy in their final Top Five. UT fans seem to think that is a good thing. Whereas, from an SEC outsider looking in at UT's program, we're more inclined to say, "No wonder UT's program is failing - hell, they've got a bunch of Cincy level athletes on that team, rather than SEC level athletes."

PS: One other thing UT fans seem to be forgetting, and that is; As sorry as Dooley was as a head coach, as big of a failure as Dooley was as a head coach, he did have one (1) win over a Top 25 team during his tenure at UT ... and that was against Jones and Cincy, in 2011 in Neyland, 45-23.

So what does that say about Jones? I dunno, Cincy did finish 10-3 that year with losses to UT, WVA and I think either Pitt or Rutgers. But the fact that he actually lost to that incompetent Dooley by such a large margin - it cannot be that good for Tennessee.
