I'm usually a nega-Gamecock, not in the sense that I'm pessimistic or expect us to suck, just that I try not to let myself get super excited or set unreasonable expectations, that being said - I'm very excited about this announcement.

Just got done watching the recent Muschamp/McClendon press conference and after reading up on him and watching his bowl game performance I'm very impressed:

- He's a strong recruiter with lots of connections in Georgia that should help us.
- He's young and the players seem to like him.
- Our Offense looked very good in the second half of the Outback bowl against the third ranked defense in the country.

I don't think he has a ton of experience calling plays but if the Michigan game is any indication he has loads of potential and he'll learn. I wasn't thrilled about the Muschamp hire but he's proven me wrong, am I off-base being happy about McClendon?

We ended the season with 102nd overall total offense and were 104th last year so improvement won't be hard. I would think he could move us up at least 20-30 spots next year and even more in the future.

I'm not as knowledgeable as most of you here so fill me in - what are your expectations for him?

I'm with you.

The thing about all of this that is getting overlooked somewhat is the Werner factor. I foresee a really productive relationship between those two. I've got family in Olive Branch who are huge Ole Miss fans and they are telling me Werner is special ... he made their offenses rock. A very level-headed teacher of the game. He gets the most out of his QBs and fits systems to the players, not the other way around. BMac will use him. This entire staff is built around a melding of the minds .... unlike past staffs that were too individualistic and egotistical.

Secondly, BMac and Werner inherent some experienced talent. Next year we should see a blossoming of sorts as we return some key players who are another year older, more experienced, more developed physically.

The beauty of it all is that BMac knows these players. He's not a new face with an entirely new approach coming-in. There will be some continuance with the system. That's going to be a good thing because that puts our offense a little higher up the ladder in terms of giving them something to build off of ... and THAT is how proficient offenses are built. By not starting from scratch every couple of seasons.

So I'm with you and everything about BMac. I've met and talked to BMac on several occasions and he is a special guy ... he'll be a head coach one day. Sort of reminds me of Lovey Smith in person ... who I met years ago in Charleston when he was recruiting Zola Davis. Those types are quietly contident, they have an air about them ... can really recruit. Relate well to the players ... and that's important because players will listen and absorb better if they have that connection.

So anyways, it just feels right. The more mUSChamp does, the more we can see a method to his madness and the guy seems to make good decisions.

Boom said something in his press conference that really stuck with me. He said he didn't offer BMac the job right after the game. He slept on it. He slept on it. Old guys like me ... that's the rule. Never make a big decision off the cuff. Always sleep on it.

Muschamp did the right thing. However this works out, he did the right thing and, from what I understand ... originally he was leaning toward hiring Werner as the OC and trying to keep BMac on as the co-OC and WRs coach. Now, take a moment to understand how different that dynamic might have ended ... same combo, different arrangement. It might have blown-up in our faces IMHO. We could have lost BMac, we could have suffered on the recruiting trail and in the PR arena, ... I mean the simple decision to make this particular equation work snd make all involved parties happy ... it was quietly genius. It's like physics. You can do the math, you can memorize all the equations, but if you can't do the set-up you can't be a physicist.

What mUSChamp is doing, what Saban has always been great at, is doing the set-up. And pardon the science flip but in this case getting the set-up right will hopefully lead to good chemistry.

I'm old enough to remember many great staffs we've had ... on paper, but the set-ups were poorly done and then it didn't matter how great the resumes appeared to be. Dietzel had that problem ... he claimed that's why he let Lou Holtz go. Carlen never did but Joe Mo did and it really showed in '88. Sparky was horrible at it. Brad Scott was the worst .... I mean I remember literal fights occuring between Eason and Reeves and others on that staff ... Wally even. Lou had the problem, there was constant shuffling and infighting and backstabbing which I blame more on Skip than Lou. Sourrier took awhile ... people forget how much flux he had in his staff before he got it right ... then he lost it again towards the end and it showed. Hell we had coaches fighting on the sidelines.

I seriously doubt we will ever see any nonsense like that from a mUSChamp staff ... because it appears the guy has learned how to get the set-up right and work from there.

It's very interesting, even impressive, to watch.

Sorry for the length of this post ... my thumbs are en fuego this morning.

Thank you Jim.

So the recruiting thing too ... Dylan Wonnum and BMac of course. But has anyone heard of Warren McClendon?

Another point in McClendon's favor is that in this new era of recruiting it really hurts you if you don't have continuity. McClendon is a familiar face going into the second phase of recruiting. The recruits know who he is and what he stands for.

At Arkansas, while we have landed some good players, this is probably going to be a lost year in recruiting because the new staff hasn't had time to develop relationships with the recruits.

McClendon won't have that problem and may actually appeal more to recruits who might have been on the fence about signing with USC because they didn't like how the offense was performing under the previous guy.
