Defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw (Goose Creek/Jones County College) is no longer committed to South Carolina. LINK

There are going to be some upset people in his circle. Of course a lot of those people genuinely want what's best for him, but for him to be upset that he feels people think he owes something to SC is a stretch. SC placed him at Jones and got him setup with the 18 month track. Muschamp and crew stuck by him the whole time even though he couldn't academically qualify. Loyalty is a 2 way street, but some kids will learn that later. Everybody has seen this type of situation before, it rarely works out for the player that does this type of thing.

Bill Gunter on 107.5 The Game alluded to some comments that Kinlaw made about Coach Muschamp and the new staff regarding his recruitment. I had to get to the office before I could listen anymore, so does anyone know what he was referring to?

What gets me most about these decommits is that it is always a "It's not you, it's me" thing. If USC is not out of the picture, keep your commitment and take a visit, but know full well that as long as you are out shopping we will be too. The grass is not always greener on the other side...

Kinlaw's comments

Muschamp and co were one of the few staffs willing to work with him and place him in JUCO. When it came time to firm up his commitment and he was reminded of these facts, he felt like Muschamps thought process was that Kinlaw owed Muschamp/staff something. Weak excuse in my book. Doubt that we use that JUCO as much anymore. However, there have been some that said that he has an extended circle that has been pushing him towards Carolina and that the pressure as a whole has caused tensions not necessarily just our staff.

So mUSChamp had to put the hard close on him and he turned it into a bad thing about USC, mUSChamp and those around him.

Fine. We need to write him off and move on. The wishy washy need to be stroked types always end-up being a cancer to a team. It would be bad form to continue to recruit him .... let him go elsewhere, wish him well. This kind of stuff happens with disloyal prima donnas in business as well - it's a lesson learned.

Loyalty is not what it used to be.

Anyways, there are other young men out there who will make a bigger contribution than he would have made here and mUSChamp will find them.

Let's have an update here. I know it's hate week and all that but I'm anxious to see where we end up.

As of right now, we are looking at a class of 21 made up of the following (according to 247):

Jamyest Williams CB 4*
OrTre Smith WR 4*
Hamsah Nasirildeen OLB/S 4*
MJ Webb DE 4*
Shi Smith ATH 4*
Will Register TE 3*
Chad Terrell WR 3*
Kyshaun Bryan RB 3*
Sherrod Greene OLB 3*
Dennis Daley OT 3* (JUCO)
Eric Douglas OT 3*
Jaylin Dickerson S 3*
Davonne Bowen OLB 3*
Tavyn Jackson CB 3*
Jay Urich DUAL QB 3*
Damani Staley OLB 3*
Tyreek Johnson DE 3*
Damarri Mathis CB 3*
Summie Carlay OT 3*
Zay Brown ATH 3*
Eldridge Thompson OLB 3* (JUCO)

If I am not mistaken, we have room for 24-25. Who do we see firming up the class leading into NSD?

As of now JUCO DBs Kale Chalmers and Kishean Nixon are both takes. Sterling is a possibility, as is a TJ Moore recommitment. Drake as well. That would give 25. Which is the target number

The excitement for me is now the unknowns. We will surely have more attrition in the off season which gives way to those last minute flips that champ is famous for. Last season we picked up Stephon Taylor who we didn't even hear about until a week or two before NSD.

We'll probably have some more early graduates, like Jasper Sasser. That 25 target number can fluctuate quickly after the Reg Season and Bowl Game.

Chalmers and Nixon will EE from JUCO and count to last year's class, which we still have room on.

We'd probably take 4* OT/OG Moore if he wanted to re-commit, but that would mean that Elliott is coming back.

I think we'd still take Kinlaw if he wanted back in, but I also don't care if he does or not.

I think we get that 3* OT Jerry Drake, who has a solid legit offer list.

3* DE Brad Johnson 'should' come to SC, Muschamp told him he's holding a spot for him. However, if things fill up with the DL surprises b/w now and Feb, who knows if that will be there. I think JW at 247 just CB'd him to VT.

3* DE Matthew Butler has been a guy Coach LT has targeted for a long time. He had 123 Tackles, 22 TFL's and 19 Sacks this year. Made several local news highlight reels. He's quick for a guy who is probably a legit 265 lbs.

Then there is 4* CB Yusof Corker, 3* S Nate Culpeppar and 3*DT Romello Martin. Of course we would oversign for 4* S DeAngelo Gibbs as well. Apparently we haven't spoken with Culpeppar in a few weeks though.

Kinlaw said that he's smoothed over everything with Muschamp and Coach LT. He has OV's scheduled for ole miss on jan 20th and alabama jan 27th, but he may change that bama OV and come to SC instead that weekend.

Bad news is saban is calling him personally. He must be tearing up the JUCO circuit this year.

I think I read on 247 that he is now setting up an OV to us.

Yes, Kinlaw gave is the final OV in late January, right before NSD. He is taking all 5 OVS though. Ole Miss and bama get their'site earlier and will try to put him in the bag before he visits us.

One thing that I saw over there working in our favor is that Kinlaw's 1st year at Juco ends right before NSD, meaning other than OV's there is no face to face contact allowed by anyone.

Damarri Mathis just de-committed. How high were we on him?

Does this mean that Chalmers or Nixon are higher targets?

We honored his commitment, and we are in dire need of DBs, so I would say that we were as high as it gets. Can't afford to be losing ANY DBs from the class: I would almost say that if we lost commitments from other positions, fill the vacancies with more DB prospects. We need big help there.

ANY DB commit looks to have about as open a competition for major playing time if not starting opportunity with this team for next season. We can't offer any prospect anything better than that, so if he wants to de-commit, then see ya....

We have I believe something like 7 DBs that will be out the door after next season. There is a definite need for the Jucos who can come in and play right away, but we do need the HS guys as well. I guess he figured he was bottom of the totem pole and decided to go else where.

The update on 247 I saw said he tried to set up an official visit with us but wasn't able to.

Maybe he's not still a take?

This was played smartly. We were his best offer. We were going to honor the NLI. He tried to setup an OV, but we weren't responsive. We haven't contacted him much lately. We want JUCOS Nixon and Chalmers more, b/c they are more developed and won't take as long to develop as Mathis will. He will find a better opportunity for himself and so will we. This was a win/win.
