Site is down for at least the weekend after it was revealed a bitcoin mining script was running on the site and utilizing visitors' machines to make someone some money.

Cached version of revelation thread is here: LINK

CT now:

Who's surprised?

EDIT: I'm not going to say CT did this on purpose, that probably isn't the case, but at the worst it's malice and at the best it's laziness. That site is terrible.

That’s very disturbing to hear about CT. Thankfully I never posted on that site but I did visit it occasionally. Looks like the site is still down this morning, any word on what is going on?

I used to post on there, but that was before bitcoin even existed. Found this place around 2007-2008ish maybe? Was under a different, but never went back either.

Used to hang out on CT a lot, bout 5-6 years ago.

Way too much sunshine and koolaid there. This place is much more lax and real. None of y'all claim I'm a Clemson fan if I think it's bullshite that we're losing to Kentucky.

Good eff CT with a cactus.

If any of those sunshine farmers make it over here they may have a mental breakdown. Most likely GoGamecocks will get a new influx and they all can pump each other along with the sunshine.

Thanks for the info KS. I don’t get the CT hate in this thread. If one is interested in recruiting and doesn’t have an Insiders account somewhere, then the Proving Ground page on CT is the best I’ve found for recruiting info.

I had been going to CT the past few days to see if there was any info on the big recruiting weekend but site has been down since Thursday or Friday. I hope it gets back up soon. There are a couple of guys who post there that have some good info and apparently work in the Athletic Department or know someone who does.

Hey Toneski. It's not like I hate all CT posters or anything, many people here including myself used to, or still do, post over there. My issue is with how some of the moderators and staff administer the site and in my experience several of them treat it like their own private playground. If you go on twitter you'll see people complain about the site for a wide range of reasons like being banned for mild criticisms of coaches or not being able to post certain things because a particular topic "belongs" to a specific poster, usually someone in a specific moderator's personal clique or the moderator themselves.

Personally my final straw came just before the 2014 Outback Bowl. I grew up a Wisconsin fan and still watch their games every year so I wrote up a detailed game preview identifying their strengths and weaknesses and how the game might play out...it was a lengthy effort post and all original content. A mod deleted it immediately, claimed I copied it from a sports website, and then posted his own incredibly shitty preview. I was careful to obey the site rules, I'd been a member there for three years at the time with no issues, and posting a preview wasn't prohibited...I'd just stepped in an area that the mod felt they owned personally. He then ignored my PMs for six months because he didn't want to admit that I hadn't copied my post, he only answered when I engaged another mod. I was never banned and still have an account there but that did it for me. I won't post there again as long as that mod is around.

A fun game to play on CT is to look at a thread more than a few years old and count the number of banned posters, it's a very very large portion. They depend on a core of regulars who subscribe to the mods' group think flavor of the week and a continuous rotation of new members. It just isn't a well moderated board and all comes down to it being a homer board, many HBs for schools have similar problems.

Definitely not knocking you for posting there or enjoying it, you do you. I'm sure there's good stuff there but it isn't for everyone. I will say that I greatly prefer that board's format to this site.

All of that said, to get back to the the main topic the behavior of the mods as I have seen it leads me to believe that they very easily could have included this coin miner on purpose. These are not people of high scruples.

I was done when Spurticus wrote the War and Peace length post about leaving CockyTalk. I also got fussed at for saying the word "Omaha" in a regular season baseball game thread.

Wait, Spurticus is gone? That's who I was bitching about. Guess I can return to CT when it comes back. See you later guys, it was nice posting with you.

and Spurticus:

No offense to the older folks, sixties aren't necessarily old, but it's when the mental effects of aging really begin to start manifesting and they've clearly taken Spurticus by storm. When you're in your sixties you can quickly become out of touch and to Spur anybody more than a decade younger than him had might as well be a teenager. Dude is extremely out of touch and has no business running a message board.

He's also a sidewalker and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, when combined with his age and hardwired narcissism ("duuuuuur I was a mod on SECRant but left because of teenagers") it creates a really weird perspective that makes him a terrible person to grant web authority. There's a whole generation of young people entering, studying at, or recently graduated from USC who want to discuss their Alma Mater on the internet and he doesn't understand them at all. I shudder to think that the first site they find is CT where Spurticus will quickly ban them for posting a word that offends his old-timer sensibilities, questioning him, or stepping in an area that's "his'. His continued presence will ensure that CT will never transcend past the culture of a shitty Facebook group circa 2009.

frick Spurticus.

Thanks for reply KS. I didn’t take offense to the CT slamming. You’ve actually reminded me of some things I also dislike.

I too have posted a lengthy piece or two which got “moved” for being off topic is that particular board, only to be moved to a completely dead board. Ticked me off as I try and make sure stats I put in a post are factual, and that takes some time to search out and then analyze. And regarding Spurticus, I have thoughts similar to yours.

Now, if someone running that site has intentionally planted cryptocurrency mining scripts to infect visitors computers then I’m completely done with CT and it’s likely others will feel the same. CT may have just been killed off for all practical purposes. It’s still down right now and any website down for this long is not being run by anyone who cares and/or is competent.

BTW, what’s a “sidewalker”? All I found on urban dictionary was someone who wants to ban smoking on sidewalks.

I don't think it's used outside of the SEC Rant but

Sidewalker (noun): a fan of a school that didn't attend that school.

I think it was originated to refer to all the trailer park Bama fans that have never set foot on campus except for the spring game.

I really hope the bitcoin script wasn't purposefully introduced by a website moderator, but wouldn't be surprised if it was.

I started to follow recruiting pretty closely once the writing was on the wall for Spurrier here, and I actually found SECRant before I discovered CT. I fell in love with both sites, but always felt CT threads were updated more frequently than they are here, but I've realized that's not necessarily a good thing as time has gone on.

The only thing I like better about CT now is that it seems to be easier to find the information you're looking for on it compared to here. This forum beats out CT in all other categories especially when it comes to comparing contributors/moderators. People on CT get so caught up in the moment about everything that's going on with our school that they never think about anything they write before posting. There are some good contributors on there, but some not so good ones also. This forum is more relaxed and the information is more factual than opinionated.

I didn't care for Spurticus' opinions before I found out he was a side walker, and now I especially won't care for them knowing that. Nothing wrong with being a side walker but unjustifiably belittling a young alumni for offering their opinion when you have no idea what it takes to graduate from USC crosses the line for me.

I'm also not worried about any CT mods reading this post because my account has been pending approval for over a year now for no apparent reason.
