#5 seems a little to high to me with all the question marks on this team. (Catcher, OF, Sunday Starter, Bullpen). Feels like we're more of a top 10-15 team atm. It will all play out as we get closer & start the season.

There are a lot of questions, but not anymore than most collegiate teams have with turnover. Our recruiting has been amazing the past 5 years, so we have a ton of talent and depth. We return six position starters, 11 pitchers and 25 letterwinners from last year's Regional team. This past year our recruiting class ranked the No. 5 by Baseball America.

As far as Catcher, we have 4 good options, and I think Hunter Taylor is the future, b/c his bat is so good.

In the OF, I don't know if we'll have a speedster covering fly's like English, but Destino is coming Scolamiero has solid defense skills.

I think this team has the right mix of experienced players and top level young collegiate talent.

You're right about the Sunday Pitcher, it's wide open, and we will need someone to step up and claim it if we are going to have a shot this season. I don't think Crowe and Wynkoop are going to win every Fri/Sat game for us. Good news is, we have a fistful of former HS All Americans who can make a run at that Sunday spot.

No doubt. A carousel in the Sunday starter could lose us a lot of series.

Also, Jake Wright, from Chester, just committed for the '16 class. This is funny b/c he was a lifelong tater fan....but now he found Jesus.

Chad must be using Ray's old line.

"Do you wanna go to Clemson and be a fan, or do you wanna come to South Carolina and go to Omaha and compete for National Championships."

He used that one on JB Jr too when JB was thinking about going to Virginia because he grew-up a VA fan.

Impressive, it's about that time again where we need a Baseball season thread here soon. Guess I'll need to make one here soon with all this new info coming out.

I just found out that Time Warner doesn't carry the SECNetwork through ESPN3....looks like wiziwag is back on the platform plate to watch the games.

Yeah I know Directv finally made a deal with both so that they will cover, but set no firm date on when it starts. Just said early 2015, better be before baseball starts up.

South Carolina received a commitment from class of 2018 catcher Charles Welch (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian) recently becoming the first member of that class. Welch was at the pitcher/catcher camp in January and was impressive to the coaching staff. He was offered shortly after the camp and it didn’t take long for him to commit. He stands 6-foot, 175 pounds and is a right-handed hitter.

There should be a handful of current commitments on campus on Sunday for the series finale against Clemson. Some of the players expected are:

2015s: INF Carlos Cortes, outfielder TJ Hopkins and RHP Nick Neidert.
2016s: RHP Sawyer Bridges.
2017s: INF Mason Streater.

Recruiting coordinator Sammy Esposito is on the hunt for junior college players who can come in and help next year offensively. He recently went to see power-hitting first baseman Ross Grosvenor of Walter State, who is hitting .408 this season with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs. He has more walks (22) than strikeouts (20). The Gamecocks have not offered at this point but he’s someone to keep an eye on.

I'm hearing rumors that we're losing a lot of recruits because of this season..

Any insight on that?

That sounds way too much like a staff that needs to find players already developed by other programs to bring games that they themselves are incapable of teaching to what are typically near top-10 rated recruiting classes. Coach Tanner believed in the JUCO route, but only to shore up positions of need where the existing talent was thin at. I thought we were bringing in top caliber prep talent for most of those positions...

Another player that South Carolina is going hard after is outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams of Iowa Western. Recruiting coordinator Sammy Esposito scouted him just over a week ago now and is trying to get him down for an official visit soon. At this point, I’m not sure which weekend that will be. The Gamecocks are likely the favorites right now for Thompson-Williams, who was an all-state football player and Gatorade Player of the Year in Iowa.

Thompson-Williams is hitting .360 this year and only has nine strikeouts in 97 plate appearances. He has three doubles, three triples and a pair of home runs.

New Commit.

Power Hitter/DH/1st Baseman Ross Grosvenor 6'5" 240lbs.

In 51 games this season, the right-handed slugger is hitting .445 with 15 doubles, 15 home runs and 78 RBIs. He has 25 walks against 25 strikeouts with an on-base percentage of .525 and .811 slugging percentage.

There's an error on the linked profile page, he actually plays for JUCO Walter State.

Walter State is a JUCO powerhouse program, several JUCO CWS's and Top10 finishes the past several years. They also put a lot of guys into D1 baseball every year.

-- From the recruiting class, 2015 infielder LT Tolbert (Piedmont/IMG Academy) was in Columbia to visit last Saturday for the Vanderbilt game. From what I understand, he’s said a lot of the right things to the coaches about coming to school next year. Tolbert hasn’t gotten as much draft heat since going to Florida for his senior season. It has ended up benefitting the Gamecocks tremendously. I still don’t believe that South Carolina is out of the woods and Tolbert still could sign for a low dollar figure but the move to IMG Academy hurt his draft stock an incredible amount.
